The more I hear Tom Mason talk, the more I like him

Coach Tom Mason is from the Old School and the more I hear him talk, the more I like him as our next head football coach. Coach Mason said yesterday after practice that we need to play like we practice and I didn't like practice, today. I'm thinking we get a full out effort from each player come this Sat at 2:30. Will it be enough to beat the Ag's? Most likely not but I can't wait to see this coach and our ponies in action.

We need to get rid of the JJ regime. And we need new blood.

I think Coach Mason is going to make a great head coach, just probably not here. Too much JJ hangover for him to deal with; if I was him I'd like the opportunity to carve out my own identity at a place that does not have the June Jones shadow still lingering over it. That said, I am looking forward to seeing what he gets out of our guys the rest of the season. Should be interesting to see how they respond. JMHO

I could see Mason being a very successful fcs coach at Montana or Montana St or something like that

Isn't Nevada his love? What is their situation?

He applied and was a finalist for the job within the last 9 months and they hired Brian Polian instead

I thought that was a couple of years ago. I am losing track of time.

You are correct... Looks like it was Jan 2013. I'm losing track too it would appear

But you are at a high altitude. Or is your flight delayed as usual?

I have nothing against Mason, but we need a fresh start. If Hart & Co. hire Mason based on a small sample size performance, I will be incredibly frustrated.

In order for Mason to get the job I think we need to go 7-3 the rest of the way and make a bowl game. If he can do that then he has proven that he can win with what we all agree is a team that lacks talent. To me, this would prove that he is ready to be a head coach. All of the candidates we have thrown around on the board that have generated excitement are coordinators. This is fine but we must always keep in mind that hiring a coordinator is a gamble. Not all are going to be good head coaches.

If they did that, it would kill their already small fan base.....now if he were to win 9 of 10 games this season!

Mason won't get the job here. . .and he knows that. I agree that he seems like a good guy and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he lands a head coaching gig. But it won't be at SMU.
Mason has got to get through the severe poundings that we are about to take at the hands of A&M and TCU and hold the team together. If he can at least somewhat right the ship for conference play and make the team look moderately competent, then that's a nice little resume builder for his next gig. Right now SMU football is as low as I've seen it since the late Caven/early Bennett years. Mason's got a chance to play out the old "I inherited chicken sh** and turned it into an OK-tasting chicken salad" routine.

there's nothing quite like a guy fighting who has nothing to lose.
