Mustangs Add Aubry Hinners To 2015 Freshmen Class
SMU has four newcomers for the 2015 season

May 13, 2015

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs added Aubry Hinners to the 2015 freshmen class, taking the number of newcomers to four. Hinners, a 5-7 defensive specialist from Westlake High School in Austin, Texas, joins Nastassja Bowman, who signed in April, Kelly Brunstein and Brittany Adams.

Hinners is a three-year letterwinner for coach Al Bennett at Westlake. As a senior, she led the Chaparrals to the UIL Regional Semifinals after claiming the 6A Region II District 14 title with a 16-0 league record. Hinners earned first-team all-district with 217 kills and 230 digs in 99 sets for the 42-5 Chaps. Also a four-year letterwinner in track, Hinners was the district champion in the high jump and was a regional qualifier.

She earned all-academic honors each volleyball season and three years in track. She was a member of the academic all-state team as a senior. Outside of the gym, Hinners is actively involved with GETMAD (Girls Energized To Make A Difference), National Charity League and National Honor Society.

Bowman, 5-10 setter from Sacramento, Calif., led Christian Brothers High School to a 27-13 record as a captain during her senior season. She had 559 assists and 205 kills as a senior, finishing her career with 948 assists and 891 kills. She played as an opposite hitter before becoming the starting setter. She averaged 6.1 assists per set, playing in a 6-2 system at Christian Brothers, but is currently playing in a 5-1 system, which is what SMU currently runs, for her club team, Five Starz.

Brunstein is a 6-1 middle blocker from Highlands Ranch High School in Highlands Ranch, Colo. A two-year team captain, Brunstein was named to the all-state team three times, including two first-team selections. She scored 233 kills as a senior, and finished with 135 blocks in 105 sets played. She also excelled in the classroom, achieving Honor Roll accolades in 2011 and 2013.

Adams led St. Stephen's Episcopal School in Austin, Texas, to the Southwest Preparatory Conference championship as a senior, earning All-Central Texas Second Team honors. The outside hitter finished her senior season with 626 kills, 491 digs and 41 blocks.

The signing class joins an SMU program that set a school record with 26 wins last season, going 26-6 with a program record 11-match win streak. The Mustangs also return five former all-conference award winners and two conference Players of the Year at their position in Avery Acker, setter, and Morgan Heise, libero.

Wow, I remember when this was just a club sport. I think the first year we had a team was the year I graduated. Sounds like the program is getting really good.

Nastassja Bowman graduated from the same HS I did! Congrats and welcome to SMU!

(The school was all male when I went there, but that just shows how old I am!)
