According to kohlskicking.com, Melvin is listed at 6-4, 184. His profile on the site:
Alex's most recent event was in Jan. 2014 at the UCC. He has shown good progress since we last saw him and it is apparent he has worked on his drops, needs to continue work on kicking with more height in order to increase hang times. Alex competed at the 2014 NSC. His charts were consistent and steady. He can still continue to work on using his natural frame for more benefit. Sit back and holding the ball longer should help with increased hang time and more control.

Kohl's gave him a ranking of 4.5 stars, and had him as the No. 74 punter in the country for this year.
Says he also had preferred walk-on opportunities at Arizona State and Cal Poly.

We could use some more competition at the punter and kicker position to get the best special teams unit we can on the field. Welcome to the 'Stang Family Melvin. #Lockarms

Agreed - our kicking game has been mostly a weakness in the JJ era - with the exception of Morstead and a couple of others.
There should be no reason to have to put an ad in the paper to get kickers on the team, other than neglect and/or indifference. As Morstead and Vinatiera's success at the pro level demonstrates how a good kicking game can help teams win championships, I am glad we are addressing this area of the team. It makes a difference.

It's hard to judge the distance of his punts in that video, but some of them seemed to hang up there a long time. Competition is a good thing for everyone.

You have the story confused. No ad was ever put in the paper to get a kicker on the team. I cant remember which player it was (maybe Symanszki)... but the player or his father saw a season preview of the football team in the paper that addressed the kicking game as a weakness, and they reached out to the coaches. JJ was terrible, but lets not be ridiculous and perpetuate a story about putting an ad in the paper for a kicker.

It was Chase Hover and it was sad either way. Putting an ad in the paper would have constituted a recruiting effort. Couldn't have that at all.

You are correct, it was Hover. Forgot about him.

I like big kickers. Of course, they have to be able to kick. The more the merrier especially if not costing us a scholly to start with. If he comes in and is all world, give him a scholly for sure. But, until then, get the competition in here and see what happens.
