Jennings selected for Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list
BALTIMORE (SMU) – SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings was named to the 2025 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List, the foundation unveiled on Tuesday.
The preseason watch list, semifinalists, finalists and award recipient are selected by the distinguished Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Selection Committee, a group of prominent college football journalists, commentators, announcers and former players. The award annually recognizes the top senior or upperclassman quarterback set to graduate with their class.
As the starting quarterback for SMU in 2024, Jennings posted a 9-2 record, leading the team to its first appearance in the College Football Playoff (CFP). His 3,245 passing yards ranked 18th in the nation while his 8.54 yards per pass attempt placed 14th.
With Jennings at the helm, the SMU offense was explosive, placing eighth nationally in scoring offense (36.5) and 12th in first downs offense (319). In the Mustangs' inaugural season in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), the team earned a perfect 8-0 record in conference play.
For his play last season, Jennings was First Team All-Texas by Dave Campbell's Texas Football, All-ACC Third Team and a finalist for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award. He has also earned preseason accolades for the 2025 season, being named Preseason All-ACC Second Team by Phil Steele, Preseason All-ACC Third Team by Athlon Sports and earning spots on the watch lists for the Maxwell Award, the Davey O'Brien Award and the Manning Award.
The namesake of the Golden Arm Award has a storied history. Johnny Unitas was an 18-year veteran of the NFL, who played his collegiate career at the University of Louisville before joining the Baltimore Colts in 1958. His career passing figures include 2,830 pass completions for 40,239 yards, 290 touchdowns and throwing a touchdown pass in 47 consecutive games.
