I was afraid of this.

Afraid of what, you ask? Sky-high hopes that are almost certain to shattered on the way to a 20-win finish and a post-season tournament. The WAC is not a weak-sister conference. That's why the magazines are picking SMU no higher than fifth or sixth. Dement wasn't that bad and Tubbs has yet to prove ...

Boycott the truth?

Dickerson, James and the other former football players -- not all were at SMU during the Pony Express era -- were asked their opinion of the current program and they gave it with varying degrees of candor.

What did the people so upset by their remarks want them to say? That Copeland and Bennett ...

Re:

No, I don't hope that coach Tubbs fails - but it is a little too early to call him the savior of SMU basketball. Everybody thought Phil Bennett was going to be the savior of SMU football, but after 31 games, his team is not playing any better than it did in his first game.

Good point, PonySnob ...

Come on, Diamond M

You know "exhibition games" never counted, so why include them? To make Dement's schedules look softer than they actually were?

Excluding the exhibitions, you are left with 2003-04/ UT-Pan Am; 2002-03/North Texas & Gardner-Webb; and 2001-02/North Texas, LaSalle & Savannah State. Even the weakest ...

Is anyone in this thread old enough to shave?

I'm no fan of Stallion. I've disagreed with him many times over the years, especially during the Cavan era on MustangManiacs. But he has a clear and consistent point of view based on a thoughtful analysis. When you guys grow up, you might give that a ...

[quote="Pony_Fan"]I am not going to bother looking it up but I am pretty sure he scheduled pansies his 1st couple of years too. ]

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that Dement did schedule pushovers the "first couple of years." He might have, but that's not the point. You cannot compare the ...

Why the double standard?

If Dement had dared to schedule Montana State, Arkansas Pine Bluff and UT-Tyler, he would have caught all kinds of hell. His replacement does it, and everyone apparently thinks it's just peachy. Why the double standard?

I-A in Name Only

SMU in Bennett's third season is a Division I-AA team playing a I-A schedule. Catch some of the Southland action on the Fox Sports cable channels. Tell me that Northwestern State, Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin could not give the Mustangs a run for their money if not beat them straight up ...

Progress Bennett Style

Bennett is making progress, isn't he? We shouldn't forget the Mustangs actually won a game, never mind that it is probably the only one they'll win this season. And if they lose the last four, won't that make Bennett 4-30? Can't say that, though. Too negative.

Let's look at the positive side ...

What happened to men's track?

I only recently learned that SMU has dropped men's track. When did this happen and what's the story -- not just Copeland's rationale -- behind the decision?

You're a breath of fresh -- should I say "sane" -- air, Couch 'Em. You do make me feel slightly guilty, though. In my 59 years, I watched Don Meredith's debut season in the 1950's, the Mustangs' (Levias & Company) Cotton Bowl season in the late 1960's, and of course the Pony Express in the 1980's ...

\"Bennett will take us to a bowl game soon.\"

Is this a serious prediction or an extreme case of wishful thinking? Living as I have for the past 35 years on the Texas Gulf Coast, I don't pretend to have any educated insight into SMU's football program. I can only go by the results, and 29 games into the Phil Bennett Era the Ponies are 4-25 ...

A shortage of cash may be an alien concept to many on this board, Mr. M65 but I for one understand. My father attended SMU on the GI Bill after WWII and I was a member of a very tiny minority on the Hilltop in the 1960's -- a working student. I worked 30 hours a week at Texas Instruments while ...

All other problems, contributing factors and/or causes of the worst losing streak in SMU football history may make for interesting conversation ...

Re: Attitude at Moody

I, too, am pleased to hear that SMU students, and presumably other spectators as well, are finally making some noise and showing some emotion. For far too long Moody has been a neutral arena that has been the visiting team's for the taking. It's about time we mothballed the tradition of the subdued ...
