Re: Question about Doh and His Record

"He's a bad x's and o's guy but a fantastic face guy."

I've been following Matt's career since he was a sophomore in college.

He is a fantastic face guy, and evidence for that is SMU's recruiting gaining traction even after years of near-complete failure on the court. He was an outstanding ...

Actually Gillispie and Doherty may have similar strengths and weaknesses as smart, hard-driving guys with big egos and bad tempers, but Matt is better at PR and behaving himself off the job.

Leading the nation in--

Opponents' free throw percentage: 75%. Need to tighten up that FT defense!

m

Also the Ponies are #310 in what Ken Pomeroy calls "luck," meaning basically that they've lost most of the close games. I suppose the discrepancy in FT shooting accounts for several losses. SMU is near the bottom in ...

Paul is rated the #12 freshman by John Gasaway, a very good CBB writer.

Regarding his problems at UNC, he inherited a good roster for the first year and exceeded expectations with it, then followed up by signing a great recruiting class. He lost four key players for the following year and had only a couple of big-time players returning, both seniors. The inherited soph ...

Don't doubt Matt's smarts and understanding of the game. He is exceptional on those points. As a Carolina fan, I remember him outsmarting Roy Williams with a tactical surprise and beating a national contender with a group of freshmen and sophomores. He is also exceptionally well-organized and hard ...

I haven't seen SMU this year, but if the past is any guide, Doh's motion offense is not a Princeton-style 5-out looking primarily for open 3s and backdoor cuts. They are looking first for post entries. And it does take a while for players to incorporate the habits of constantly moving to the open ...

-----"what kind of impact Faye will have"-------

People around Georgia Tech were fairly giddy about Faye's potential based on things like alley-oops and shotblocks in pickup games. His freshman year he was a good rebounder in games. He also had high rates of blocks and steals, and that combo is ...

^You best help your conference-mates get bids by making the top 50 or top 100 RPI, which is probably out of reach this year. If you can't do that, you help your conference-mates boost their own RPI by posting a decent winning percentage, since opponents' W% is the biggest factor in RPI. So playing ...

Matt has a stubborn streak. I would guess he insisted they sit down with him and they refused.

So a redshirt year doesn't reduce eligibility, and a sitting-out transfer year doesn't reduce it either, but you are saying that the combination does? I hadn't heard of that.

The Carolina women do still play at me.

Oh, and Faye was a freshman last year. He should have 2.5 years of eligibility.

I've seen him. He is phenomenally athletic for his size and has great potential as a shot-blocker, alley-ooper, offensive rebounder, etc. With a year of good coaching, he could become a star for SMU.

With the level of talent that will be available for the next few years, SMU may need to be a "system" team if they are going to compete with good mid-major teams. It is hard to get good team play out of a group that features four freshmen unless the rookies come in with fundamental skills and are ...

How about comparing 9-3 to 7-5, then? By this week last year all SMU's wins were sub-#225 and they had lost to a team worse than A&T. This year they have two respectable wins. Surely nobody was entertaining hopes of making the NCAA this year, but it looks like there is real improvement.
