Question about Doh and His Record

Post by ponyboy »

In any season he's been here have Doherty's teams ever played above or below their talent level? Serious question. I don't have a hidden agenda. Opinions?

In fairness to Doh, the talent level the last 3-4 years is as bad as it has ever been at SMU. Granted that is mostly his doing (recruiting) but we simply haven't had consistent gaurd play here during his tenure. Don't get me wrong I think he is a TERRIBLE coach, but with the influx of talent coming in next season it might just be worth it to ride it out this year and see what we have next year.

We've completely performed to our talent level, not above or below really. The lack of talent is on Doh and a billion other factors, though. Ultimately, SMU hoops would have been greatly aided by an experienced AD, and search committee of hoops-centric folks, that understood the challenges of the position at that time.

Orsini didn't know the landscape, hired an arrogant 'my way or the highway' blue blood coach, that didn't know a damn thing about the difficulties of the program. What Doh knew about SMU was Carolina playing them in the 80s. All parties were side-swiped, which is one reason I blame Orsini as much as anyone. It was the blind leading the blind for more than a minute

PonyDoh,

Do you think we'll be competitive in CUSA next season with the new recruits/ineligibles? Even w/ Doh?

absolutely we'll be competitive, but way too young & inexperienced to have top 3 expectations or anything. We'll be hell on wheels in '12/'13, I'd think, especially if we're recruiting as well for '12 as we seem to be.

How does next year's talent compare to the Sasser, Davis, Elsey, Hanc0ck days?

Talent or no talent...his record here speaks for itself. What else is there to look at! This program under his direction or lack thereof has been nothing but one blunder after another in every aspect of the game.

ummm, there is a ton of other stuff to look at. Not all jobs are created equal. Doh still sucks, but this job sucked just as bad when he arrived.

So let me recap. He's a bad x's and o's guy but a fantastic face guy. His teams have played to the talent level he's had to work with, which is of course his own fault but which will very quickly be remedied.

Based on that, I am having a hard time finding a reason to ax the guy. Ax me after next season, lol.

For me it's turning in to the same thing as the NCAA red shirt rule question asking. There's a select group of people that love to wander in to the conversation and boldly proclaim "We should have fired Doh two years ago after his third season!" and being that ignorant or willingly naive or just stupid is almost scary after it's been explained to them 12 times why it's a terrible idea to have done that.

When your program has the inability to defeat the Alabama States, UA-Pine Bluffs, UC Riversides, Texas States, etc. it is an indictment of the leadership.

We know SMU hoops is poor. But it's embarrassing when you're losing to these types of programs. Doherty can go on any postgame show he wants and blast his team's effort, toughness and whatnot.

The bottom line is that results -- talent or lack thereof -- all stop at his office. His stewardship of this program is unacceptable.

We need to find the courage to make a change and use financial savvy to do so.

The bottom line of this hire was never results, just rehab. No one was winning those first 3 years, nobody. Now we can look for results, whether it be Doh or someone else. My problem isn't waiting till next year, or even the sorry losses, it's this abortion of a year we're currently watching. It takes a lot of screwing up to create the perfect storm behind this particular roster, especially in year 5. OTOH, there isn't one team in america more improved on paper next year. One way or another, it'll play out.

I'm not big on buying out guys w/only a year remaining, as its wasted cash that could be used elsewhere. That's not saying I want to see Doh remain, but this program is bleeding, what's another year.

Then aren't we in a situation where you have to extend him so he can recruit? Very few coaches, if any, coach in the last year of their contract.

I don't think he gets extended (nor should he), or we'll have booster armageddon, but how does he recruit in the last year of his contract?
