It used to be that SMU football was the 4th or 5th team covered by local stations after TCU, Baylor, Texas, A&M, etc.. not now.

Much of the first part of the 9pm show and Free 4 All will be dedicated to SMU making the playoff.

It's pretty clear from the comments of the committee chair that SMU must win the ACC Championship to get in. They will take a 3 loss Alabama team over a 2 loss SMU team.

Just for some perspective, here are the average attendance figures for the local colleges so far this season:

TCU: 43,432 9,445 undergrad enrollment
SMU: 24,207 6,479 undergrad enrollment
UNT: 22,349 31,347 undergrad enrollment

All of which is to say, winning helps build the fanbase.. a lot.

The site I look at show SMU-Memphis was #1 in the demo, #2 in overall viewership Saturday night, and beat the Fox game 2.93 to 2.81 million in total viewership. See the stats here:

That's exactly what they are doing. Once that poll comes out, it's the only ranking ESPN mentions.

My view as a long-suffering SMU fan who thinks the national media hates us:
We will drop out of the top 25, but probably still get some votes. Unless we win the next 3, don't look for us to return to the top 25.

I looked at it like this: several of the lower-ranked teams would have to lose for SMU to make it in. I don't believe there were enough such losses to let that happen this week. It will be close and we might get to 25, but don't count on it.
