Question: Our Play-by-Play & Color guys?

Postby PonySoprano » Thu Apr 12, 2007 10:59 pm

I was talking to a fellow Mustang die-hard yesterday and we were trying to reconstruct our radio team from the fall of 1989 until now.

Here is what I remember:
1989: Play-by-play: Ted Dawson Color: ???
Ted Dawson was the play-byplay guy for awhile. If memory serves me correctly, Ted also did play-by-play after Coach Gregg stopped coaching the team - Coach Gregg became the color commentator for the radio broadcasts.
In 1999. when the Ticket took over our games, Mark Followill became the play-by-play voice. I know that Dan Frieburger jumped in as a color guy.

So, can somebody outline the progression of Mustang radio voices from the mid-80s until now?
Thanks

Craig James was the color guy in 89. Walter Lynn started doing the play by play in 93. Thats all I can think of right now.

When football was brought back in 1989, Ted Dawson was the play-by-play guy (and terrible), with Craig James as color guy .... and PonyPride as statistician. Can't think of two guys who thought they know more than everyone else alive more than those two. They'd try to shout over each other because they love the sound of their own voices, and wanted to be viewed as experts.

At least Craig James knew what he was talking about -- Dawson was an absolute trainwreck. I still remember sitting in the booth in Ownby as we were getting ready for a broadcast.... against A&M, I think, but I'm not sure. Anyway, Dawson was going through his pre-game act, reading stats, talking about the weather, talking about himself, etc., when the Peruna handlers started racing up and down the field, warming up. One of them stubbed his toe and went flying. Never let go of the line, so he flipped up in the air like he was doing a flip on a trampoline or something. Dawson interrupted his "I invented football" rant and said something like "Ladies and gentlemen, while the players are warming up, the guys who run with Peruna have to warm up, too, and one of them just stubbed his toe and went 'a$$-over-breakfast.' "

Everyone had to leave the booth we were laughing so hard. I ruined my stat sheets by spraying Dr Pepper all over them. Nobody was quite sure what that phrase meant, but every time someone brought it up in a commercial break, we all lost it again.

Fortunately, Dawson had a killer toupe to laugh at, too. He didn't know football, but we had some laughs up there.

Speaking of Ted Dawson, he was the sports guy for the ABC affiliate in Los Angeles while I was growing up. I used to watch him before switching over to watch Chick Hearn host Bowling for Dollars.

In January I was skiing in Jackson Hole and one night I was watching the local news. The sports segement comes up and who is the sports guy? Ted Dawson. He's now working for the CBS affiliate in Idaho Falls.

Talk about a career going in the toilet. From LA (Top 2 market), to Dallas, and now in Idaho Falls.

By the way, his sportscast still sucked.

At least a few years ago -- and maybe still now -- he was doing Boise State radio. I would trust that as BSU has climbed into the national picture, they got a real announcer. He was comically bad.

after 89 and before he went to Boise, Ted Dawson worked at the Albuquerque CBS affiliate, doing nothing sports-related. He had a noontime 'magazine' type show. Seems like he's migrating further and further from Dallas.

On some of the early to mid 80s videos of football games I have (games at Texas Stadium), the play-by-play guy is Bill Coats, who has for the last several years been a sports guy at KTBB radio in Tyler I believe (same place as David Smoak). I'm not sure if they were SMU-only broadcasts, but these were games not on, say, ABC, but on the equivalent of what KDFI is now.
