Pack football: Nevada likes what it sees from SMU's rush defense
BY DAN HINXMAN • [email protected] • DECEMBER 8, 2009

It didn't take long for Nevada running back Vai Taua to notice one particular statistic about SMU: rush defense.

The Mustangs, who will take on the Wolf Pack in the Hawaii Bowl at Honolulu on Dec. 24, allow 169.2 rushing yards per game and an average of 4.4 yards per carry.

Those aren't horrible numbers -- the per-game average is 88th out of 120 FBS teams -- but they're enough that Taua said it got him licking his chops.

And Padron, Sanders, Wilkerson, Beasley, etc. are licking their chops after reviewing the Nevada pass defense. This could turn into one interesting game.

Go 'Stangs!!!!

SMU would have the 4th ranked passing offense in the WAC in yards per game, 6th ranked in yards per attempt and 8th ranked in QB rating. But you'd be ranked 7th in scoring. Your newer QB has definitely done better than the original starter, but it was against the easier part of your schedule. You'll move the ball, but I don't think you'll score enough points to win.

It should be a fun game. SMU has played most everyone pretty close and you have a good win over ECU. Massey and Sagarin both rank ECU and Nevada about the same, so it's definitely a winnable game for you guys. But only if you can stop the run.
