I buns me that the non athletic part of the university refers to athletic scholarship as 'non merit' scholarships. The reason is that athletic scholarships are earned just the merit isn't based on GPA or SAt results. If a kid walks on and earns a scholarship, regardless of the ability to pay, then he should receive the scholarship. The award of the scholarship is a recognition of athletic merit. That is an honor just like receiving an academic scholarship.

And we have had plenty of athletes that have had full rides from the beginning and never contribute. At least with the walk-on, you have a chance to evaluate their athletic abilities at the college level and not the HS level.

JJ may have a different philosophy and it is his program to run. I just feel that if the kid earns it, regardless of the ability for his family to pay, he should receive it.

Our walk ons must be doing pretty good so far.. This year we have seen Mojica, Ryan Walker, and Cameron Rodgers all playing. And isnt Aaron Davis a walkon? pretty sure he has played. Anyone else?

Plus I keep hearing the walk-on corners name mentioned. (the kid who's dad played at UT) Sounds like he could be a player.

And lets hope our walk on qb McDermott steps up and looks like Colt Brennan next season!

Colt Brennan turned down a scholarship from San Jose State to walk on to Hawaii...JJ personally recruited Colt and convinced him to walk on. That was a *great* recruiting job.

Tyler Graunke had excellent stats out of high school and redshirted at Hawaii, so he knew the system far better than Colt. Colt didn't even start the season as the starter, so JJ obviously gave Colt no promises of playing time when he got Colt to walk on.

After Colt had spent a year at Hawaii and earned the starting QB job, awarding Colt a scholarship was probably the easiest decision ever for any walk-on that JJ had.

Thanks Garrett. If Mojica can continue to be a significant contributor, then it would seem he deserves the scholarship. The contributions we've seen from walk-ons seems to indicate JJ's eye for talent. Time will tell.

BTW, Mojica was all Orange County in both football and soccer, a rare combo

Based on special teams play and being in the two-deep you would expect to be placed on scholarship, especially if you were a jr or sr. The problem I see is that the talent and depth of this team should increase dramatically in the next 2-3 years. So much so that a player who may be contribuiting and even starting for us this year may not be starting or even in the two-deep in a couple of years. That is a good thing.

I think the situation with Colt Brennan goes a little bit deeper when considering some other issues off the field and just getting a second chance.

yes there was that little intervening factor of a criminal conviction before he "walked-on" at Hawaii.
