Coaches are a dime a dozen, we got one for a little bit more. Made good news for a while, but now we will see if it was worth all the hype.

Bennett left us players that don't fit Jones' offense. There is a difference. Whatever my thoughts about bigdaddy playing the nuances about JWill, Jones, recruiting, and the run/shoot vs. whateverthehellthatthingwas that Burns ran, I concede the point that what Burns was running was beginning to work...it just didn't have any support from the defense. Frankly, I think this SMU defense would have complimented Burns' offense nicely, and I do think we would have had a win or two more than we do...but that's pretty much it. I saw what I needed to see Saturday nite. I hope I see the same this Saturday nite. If I do, I think we have a real shot at making the rest of this season as crucial to team development as any spring ball. I recall Marshall's legendary high school coach, Dennis Parker, back in the mid-late 80s. The Class of 1987 (Fall 86) had a losing season, but they were the kids that Parker noted as responsible for the will to win for the next 4 years, where Marshall finished a collective 43-8-1...Yeah, it's high school, not college, but the lessons apply here. That could be this senior class at SMU. Might not be, but from what I saw last Saturday, it's possible. And those were Bennett's kids...just coached better by a different team. I think you will find that Mouse Davis developed the R & S concept as the high school coach at Hillsboro HS, an eastern surburb of Portland, Oregon. Mouse brought it to the college level in the early 70s at Portland State University and his first successful QB was local product June Jones.
Davis, like JJ, never had great defenses in college or even in the pros. Defenses were constantly on the field as the offense would score so quickly. Theory was to have just enough defense to be able to out score the other offense. I have personally seen JJ as the QB of Portland State beat Boise State circa 1974 in a 52 to 50 score. I recall something like 5 TDs scored in the last 6 minutes. JJ's tight end was Clint Didier who played for the Washington Redskins for many years and a guy ( first name unrecalled) Steib who was a flanker for the St. Louis Cardinals for a time. Yes folks, the tight end can be a principal and dominant receiver in the original R & S. Yes, it takes real talent at the flanker/tight end positions to make the reads and run the proper routes. Only Mouse knows how closely JJ runs the R & S to the original concept.

He didn't like kids from East Texas who didn't attend his camp. At least one from Tatum two years ago was very interested in SMU; Bennett wasn't in him. A former mentor to Bennett attempted to contact him regarding an athlete from Evangel that was interested in SMU, but never got a call back. The former went to Baylor or A&M, I think. The latter went to Arkansas. You just have to have a sense of humor; otherwise, the whole Bennett recruiting experience just seems, well, pitiful. The fact that SMU got a few pretty darn good athletes begins looking a lot like dumb luck. Whether it was more or less difficult, I just don't know.
