OC Mustang wrote:WTF, man? I mean, really, what is your point? You're frustrated? Yeah, no kidding. We get that. We bought the t-shirt. Next. You're irritated that Jones is coach? Wait a second...didn't you just get finished on some other thread that Jones & Co. know what they are doing and will fix SMU's losing? Or is all that tongue-in-cheek sarcasm, and it just hasn't translated on this forum properly?
Next subject: What was Burns' offense called, eh? (besides "crap" before JWill got there) Is it the wannabe WVU spread? The wannabe Utah option spread? The wannabe somethin-or-other spread? Is that where we need to be? Jones' spread is the run-and-shoot, or some derivative of it? Okay. Got it. Who the [deleted] cares when it started or from whence it came? It's his system; he likes it. Still needs athletes. And since Jones says that the best athletes on the field tend to win the game, I think he probably believes that first, no matter his preference for tossing the ball.
I am cool that he knows what he is doing. A lot of folks, experts and so-called experts...think the same thing. We may all be wrong, just like everybody was wrong about Iraq having WMDs... ...however, in this case, I am pretty sure that Jones' track record gives him considerably more credibility than either Bush or you.
Okay, no more drinks for you. Calm down big boy. It is a forum. No frustration here. I am just typing and spouting my two cents. You don't have to read it, but obviously something hit a nerve. Coaches are a dime a dozen, we got one for a little bit more. Made good news for a while, but now we will see if it was worth all the hype.
TCU in '06 for National Championship. I am laughing histerically now.
I really don't know what you are smoking. Let me know when they win the national championship. That will never happen.
No, not my money, could care less. It is nice to see the Miracle Worker coaches out there that can turn it around in 1-2 yrs. PB left us squat on the field, sorry boss. You are full of it.
Cavan left us squat on the field.
Bennett left us players that don't fit Jones' offense.
There is a difference.
Whatever my thoughts about bigdaddy playing the nuances about JWill, Jones, recruiting, and the run/shoot vs. whateverthehellthatthingwas that Burns ran, I concede the point that what Burns was running was beginning to work...it just didn't have any support from the defense.
Frankly, I think this SMU defense would have complimented Burns' offense nicely, and I do think we would have had a win or two more than we do...but that's pretty much it.
I saw what I needed to see Saturday nite. I hope I see the same this Saturday nite. If I do, I think we have a real shot at making the rest of this season as crucial to team development as any spring ball. I recall Marshall's legendary high school coach, Dennis Parker, back in the mid-late 80s. The Class of 1987 (Fall 86) had a losing season, but they were the kids that Parker noted as responsible for the will to win for the next 4 years, where Marshall finished a collective 43-8-1...Yeah, it's high school, not college, but the lessons apply here. That could be this senior class at SMU. Might not be, but from what I saw last Saturday, it's possible.
And those were Bennett's kids...just coached better by a different team.

And BYU doesn't run the run and shoot and never has. Just further shows you don't know [deleted].
They were the first to run it in the late 70 to early 80's. The old offensive coordinator that went to Louisville with Kragthope (eventually getting fired) was the offensive coord or QB coach? Long time ago, sorry for the skipping around but I can look it up and get back to you. Leach was on his staff and learned the system later on as well as the UH and later JJ. BYU won national championship in 80 i believe. Actually 1984 with Robbie Bosco. Coach was Lavell Edwards.
" It's just evolved to where everyone in the United States now runs it, including everyone in the NFL. A portion of all packages has been developed out of it. You don't see the pure Run and Shoot much anymore. It's been incorporated in to other offenses." Mouse Davis (2004) ( father inventor of the R & S)
I think you will find that Mouse Davis developed the R & S concept as the high school coach at Hillsboro HS, an eastern surburb of Portland, Oregon. Mouse brought it to the college level in the early 70s at Portland State University and his first successful QB was local product June Jones.
Davis, like JJ, never had great defenses in college or even in the pros. Defenses were constantly on the field as the offense would score so quickly. Theory was to have just enough defense to be able to out score the other offense. I have personally seen JJ as the QB of Portland State beat Boise State circa 1974 in a 52 to 50 score. I recall something like 5 TDs scored in the last 6 minutes. JJ's tight end was Clint Didier who played for the Washington Redskins for many years and a guy ( first name unrecalled) Steib who was a flanker for the St. Louis Cardinals for a time. Yes folks, the tight end can be a principal and dominant receiver in the original R & S. Yes, it takes real talent at the flanker/tight end positions to make the reads and run the proper routes. Only Mouse knows how closely JJ runs the R & S to the original concept.
There is nothing more fun than reading pages of the crazy ramblings and non-sensical flame wars that bigdaddy08091 posts. I have missed the President of the Idiocracy.

Thanks Brian. Keep reading, obviously you are learning! Idiocracy, can you use it in a sentence please? The idea is to have fun with the board. Glad you are enjoying yourself.

He didn't like kids from East Texas who didn't attend his camp. At least one from Tatum two years ago was very interested in SMU; Bennett wasn't in him. A former mentor to Bennett attempted to contact him regarding an athlete from Evangel that was interested in SMU, but never got a call back. The former went to Baylor or A&M, I think. The latter went to Arkansas.
You just have to have a sense of humor; otherwise, the whole Bennett recruiting experience just seems, well, pitiful. The fact that SMU got a few pretty darn good athletes begins looking a lot like dumb luck. Whether it was more or less difficult, I just don't know.
