I think this year has proved that coaching does not trump size and talent. TCU's defensive backs are a perfect example of the advantages of size along with speed. Your DB's are huge compared to ours and very fast. It makes a difference for sure.

Certainly talent is important but I think SMU is just as talented as Tulane, UTEP and Memphis. Our starting corners are actually pretty small:
Priest 5'10" 163 lbs
Sanders 5'10" 174 lbs

Well then it is all the other guys back there behind the line and between the corners I'm thinking about.

I hear that...our LBs and safeties are pretty big.

As BUS and I have long advocated, BIG UGLIES are where games are won or lost. Without strength and size in the line, you won't win. If your D-line is undersized, they get pushed around and safeties start having to make tackles. If your O-line is undersized, the QB spends his career running for his life. and forget running plays. You get a few Sasquatches in there and you will start winning. Or 5 or six Louie Kelchers. SMU since the DP has had a distinct size disadvantage.

Wouldn't u love 2 c something close to a Wes Hopkins or Russell Carter head hunting in the defensive backfield.

This just points out that it does come down more to the players & not so much the coaches.

I do not see any problem with JJ in the C-USA. What is your point?

Our biggest problems are skill level of players and the choice to go with "potential" over experience.

And aside from the fact that SMU is a coaching graveyard, how exactly do you know that?

really my only concern about June Jones from Day 1 is whether he can recruit in Texas with very few Texas contacts. I think that will be answered next year when he doesn't start the race 2 months behind like this year. With such an early committed class, June Jones and staff can now begin concentrating on the 2010 Class starting this November, identify their top prospects and begin offering in March like everybody else is. Last year schools were out of the gate in recruiting before Jones knew how to pronounce Mexia, Waxahachie or Refugio and of course, he had little contact with the 2009 Class in the crucial junior year which he will in 2010.

Out of curiousity, what would you have done after Cavan to help our program succeed or do you think we cut Cavan off too quickly?

All I know is Cavan had SMU closer to a bowl game than anyone since Bobby Collins. I also remember him responding to SMU saying they had "seen enough" by saying he had "had enough" after his final game, then walking off into the sunset with his wife.

As far as what I would do to help our program succeed? Recruit some running backs and start running the option again. I think it was Darrell Royal that said, "Three things can happen when you throw the ball, and two of them are bad".
