Let me ask a question. How hard could it be to defend a team you knew did not have one skilled inside offensive big man. Generally, the idea is to get 5 guys on the court who can score. I bet this might be a clue as to our inability to score especially when we are not playing Savanah St.
Stallion chimes in with another profound observation.
...stupid thread, sort of makes me actually long for the BOTM....not. Give Tubbs a break, enough with the constant premature ejaculation around here...relax. Long Live Chad Allen.
The jury is still out on Tubbs, but travelling down I35...
I'd take Gillespie (A&M) over Drew (BU) AND Barnes (UT). Barnes recruits like Mack, no doubt! But since TJ Ford, he hasn't found a true point guard. Gibson, Abrams, all of 'em played the point in HS-- but that was HS coaches putting the ball in the scorer's hands. In the last 5 minutes of a game Barnes reminds me of Henry Winkler in WaterBoy. They have no plays, no clues, talent only. During March Madness, Duke, UConn, MichSt, ILL(or others) will send the orange Micky D's home early. Now, Drew is a good guy ( and was a good player), but he ain't taking BU to the promise land. IMO... Gillespie is the sleeper in the Big XII (especially when he gets to coach against the 'Sons of the Pioneers' [Knight & Sutton] over the next few years. Maybe not this year (starting a walk-on, no less), but he will make A&M a winner.
It's called "teaching". If you can't get the studs to come here, you better teach the kids you get to be very strong on the fundamentals - like making good passes, hitting the open man, making your free throws, everyone boxing out, hustling to loose balls. And the word is very little of that is going on............. For a reference point, watch Izzo's team play. Time for a dream part II. Imagine a state of the art basketball facility where Mrs. Baird's is. A big red pony emblazoned on the facade overlooking Central Expressway................................
One more thing about facilities since we are spending the school's money. If money is to be raised to improve facilities, then why not spend the money to build a completely new facility? A new practice facility would be nice but do we really want to hook it onto an aging outdated facility? I would rather turn Moody into something else and build a first class facility elsewhere.
It really is a shameIt is really a shame that Hopkins career was basically a waste...in fact you could argue that Hopkins going to SMU hurt the SMU program, because top notch recruits like Darrell Arthur surely will fear their careers will turn sour likes Hopkins did at SMU.
I miss Troy Matthews.
Just 'establish' the inside/outside game huh? With who, Rack or the freshmen? I think they have tried to do that early in several games, but Rack isnt able, even though he is improved. Counting on freshman isnt going to get it done very often.
Gillespie's team just lost at home to Oklahoma in almost identical fashion to SMU. Whats so great about that? Drew's team just got blown out at home to Ok State. SMU gave them a much better game in Stillwater. I'm not here to bag on Gillespie or Drew, but I dont know how you can overlook the similar or worse losses these guys have had, but at the same time conveniently bash Tubbs. Does Drew get a pass because he has to play freshmen big guys like Diene and Rogers alot? Uh, that sounds like a very similar situation to Fall and Morris.
The big men that we have are more than sufficient against the teams that we are playing with the exception of maybe Memphis and Oklahoma. Morris, Pearson and Yes even Rack would be able to get an inside/out game going. Tubbs tries to run an offense through the post maybe five times a game and that is not enough cause any defense to breakdown.
No Drew and Gillespie get a pass because they are bringing in some big time recruits and not a guy who is averaging 6 pts a game and plays only ten minutes in high school. The direction of their programs are definitely moving up and i am not sure that the direction of ours is.
it is a little different at Baylor because they have had scholarship limitations which have prevented them from fielding a full team. Correct me if I am wrong but I think they have 10 on scholarship this year-8 the year before and only about 5 the year before that. Baylor is forced to go with big men because of those limitations.
