Except for getting nervous after the KO return Bennett made no obvious on field coaching errors.

actually the third field goal attempt with two minutes left was an error in my mind - more to lose then gain on that - about the only way Frogs can win is block and return the kick for a TD - and then we would see an onsides kick with a lttile under 2 minutes left and they have a time out - and it did end up being blocked.

otherwise, pretty tight by the coaching staff - and some nice calls on O and D - especially D.

We will need some better b.s. on offense before the season is out -

Thought for sure they would quick-kick that play. Wonder if SMU has a direct snap to kicker for a quick-kick?
What we obtain too cheap.. we esteem too lightly. It is persistence alone that gives everything its value.

Disagree. I thought about this quite a bit and argued both sides with BrianT on the last two attempts. You are up 11 and have four and two and a half minutes left respectively. Each time you are fairly deep in TCU territory. They have to score two touchdowns quickly anyway. What percentage of kicks are blocked? 5%? even on a bad team it can't be better than 10%. Safe play is to go for the fieldgoal and make it two touchdowns to tie rather than two touchdowns to win.

The other options are (i) to go for it, which is a low percentage play, and would have been viewed as ridiculous anyway; or (ii) shank the punt to the corner and hope to have them at around the 10, a difference of 7 yards, with the risk of (a) having the punt blocked or (b) having the ball be a touchback, and (c) the remote possibility of breaking one for big yardage.

The last kick was a 43 yard attempt which means the ball was on the 35. I think you punt that ball with 2 minutes left when they have only one time out. They would have to move the ball all the way down the field twice to win, and they were not rhwoing that well. Do not give them the shot at the block/easy /quick touchdown. And I would say the chances of a block on an SMU kick or punt is about 35% right now until they prove otherwise.

Overall great game so we are splitting hairs, but I still say it was a incorrect decision that we got lucky to 1) cover the block and 2) get the interception later.

43 yd attempt

Postby Boston Pony » Mon Sep 12, 2005 8:15 pm

a 43 yd. attempt would be kicked from the 33 (10 yd. endzone). The line of scrimmage would have been the 27 - 28 yd. thus a field goal is better than a punt no matter the percentages - go up by 14 with a fg. ball at the 27 with a miss.
