Something I noticed about Chris Phillips after the game..You know who poured the bucket of water over Phil Bennett at the end of the game?
Kyle Griffin and.. guess who? CHRIS PHILLIPS No sour grapes.. this kid is classy. Hang in there Chris and thanks for being a team player. What we obtain too cheap.. we esteem too lightly. It is persistence alone that gives everything its value.
I saw a #7 missing the tackle on the TCU kickoff return to begin the 2nd half. Surely, Phillips wasn't playing special teams?! Any guesses?
That was David Haynes..

Plus, on the Running with the 'Stangs segment this week, they quoted CHris as saying he planned to be frying some eggs come Sunday... also, the week before Phil had the classic "modular dorm" joke about Phillips's helmet.

A big part of SMU's problems the last several years have been at the QB position. Aside from Luker and Page leaving, Sanders and McCown leaving early really put SMU at a hugh disadvantage. It is important to keep the QBs we recruit at SMU for four to five years. Phillips will be the starting QB next year and I predict he will likely see some action this season.
Does anyone know why we have two players with the same number "33" ![]() ![]()
That happens a lot -- as long as the players who share numbers never play on the field at the same time (Duke Hasson and Rico Harris both wear #6, Haynes and Phillips both wear #7, etc. -- a lot of schools do it.) So you can assume that Rico will never be on the field when we're kicking a field goal or extra point, because Hasson is the holder.
Benson Sloan .. a DB also wears number 33.

Um .... what? Can you fill us in on the "modular dorm" comment?
Phillips' behavior is not a surprise. He's a very classy young man, and a great Mustang - on and off the field.
Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
Heh... It was pretty hysterical. You can see it as the Running w/the 'Stangs segments have, up until this point, not been a part of the subscription service. Basically the upshot is Phillips has a huge head, the largest helmet size on the team. Bennett had one of the largest (if not the largest) helmet size on his Aggie team. Hasson tells Bennett that the players have a pool going on who's helmet size is/was bigger.... Bennett skirts answering the question by answering, (something along the lines of) "I will tell you this... President Turner called me about using Chris's helmet as a modular dorm when his playing days are through." The way Bennett deadpanned it was classic. ![]() Eric Dickerson in Pony Excess "I've love winning man, it's like better than losing." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh
I would really like to see him get another chance to be a great Mustang on the field. Phillips at QB with Martin at RB.....now that would be fun to watch.
I don't understand why everyone is so concerned about Phillips' satisfaction level. It is usually standard procedure to have a quarterback develop for a couple of years as a backup before coming in as a starter. It is certainly a luxury that we haven't had until now because we have lacked depth at that position. But now we have the opportunity to take the usual and preferred route for a college quarterback. There are, of course exceptions, but for the most part, this is how it works and it should be no surprise that Chris is taking his 3rd string position in stride, wanting what is best for the team and his own development. Look at the Texas Tech quarterbacks, they wait until Junior, sometimes Senior year to get their chance to be the starter and no one over there is complaining. If you recruit right, that is how it should work in the first place.
Kudos to Chris for being a team player, but that is precisely what I would expect in the first place.
The difference here is that Phillips was the starter last year, over both guys ahead of him, and basically lost his position as a result of injury. If you cannot see the concern arising from that, I don't know what else to tell you.
