Agreed

My friends up at Cincy see things opposite. They were so depressed after losing to Harvard that they are wishing that they could be where SMU is right now. They would have loved to have 3 home games and maybe win the NIT as opposed to what they had to deal with. Major depression.

The grass is always greener.

The NIT has been a great consolation prize, but the NCAA tournament is always the goal.

That's because Cincinnati is established. If SMU wins the NIT and then makes the NCAA tournament next year and gets bounced in their first game that would still be progress. We are building to try to get where they are.

As an example, ask St. John's if they are happy with their NIT appearance or if they would have preferred to be in the NCAA tournament.

I have a friend who went to Dayton. He said a few years ago they won the nit and was of the opinion that winning the nit is a billion times better than getting bounced in the first round in bum duck nowhere. I agree. That assumes we would have lost first round and win the nit.

The sting for me will never go away. Winning the nit will help. Nothing else would.

I would rather be the team that everyone thinks got robbed and then dominated the NIT than the team that was on bubble and lost play in game

As a casual, it is hard not to root for SMU

I'll give you that. If you're giving me the choice of losing the play-in game or a solid NIT performance, I I'd pick the NIT. But even a chance to play in the first round (the real first round, not the Tuesday/Wednesday bullsh*t) would swing me back to the NCAA tournament. And this year, I think we could've won at least a game or two. As others have said, the sting remains but the NIT has been a pretty good salve. And on top of that, the future is looking pretty damn bright.

I appreciate the difference in prestige of the tournaments, but a significant disparity of results matters. IF SMU wins the NIT, will Iowa and Xavier really think they had a better postseason?

As they lost to an #8 seed at home they likely would have been blown out as a low seed in NCAA game. Either way, they failed this postseason.

Risk versus reward.

I've loved this NIT ride so far, but it really comes down to the fact that the NCAA tournament is every quality team's goal at the beginning of the year. The NIT is the next best option, but it is just that. Nobody rejects a NCAA bid for a NIT bid.

True, but you have to incorporate the results in your final evaluation. Do you really think the teams that went to the NCAA tournament and lost in first/second round games really view their season as a success? Even those with blowout/embarrassing losses?

In these tourneys so much of it is coaching.

I actually think SMU had a legitimate shot at the Sweet Sixteen so to compare our NIT run to what might have been in the NCAA's is unfair. We'll simply never know.

I will say this. Couple of posters said beating LSU felt as good as any accomplishment this season. I tend to agree. Defeating a big-time regional opponent is truly special. That's what made the SWC so unique.

In the long run, the NIT experience and not getting to the NCAA will be a great benefit to this young team. However, for the program, the you get more press and attention for making the Tourney than you do If you win the entire NIT

It's not really fair to judge with the benefit hindsight. I'm sure most of those teams went in hoping for more. (And for some of the lower seeds, just getting on the floor in the NCAA tournament is success.)

I will grant you, I'm much happier right now about playing in the NIT than I would be if SMU had gotten stomped last Tuesday or Wednesday in the "First Round" game. But the fact is, we'll never know what would've happened. I really wish we knew... and I'd personally trade the NIT run, even if were to win it all, to find out.
