I think a game winner to go to the NIT final 4 where we have never been takes the cake imo.

it was sweet. but how about a clutch 3 that gave SMU their last outright championship (SWC championship at that) and got us to the big dance?

I think the '93 shot will have to take the win here, but since I was in elementary school and unaware SMU existed at the time I'm gonna call this the greatest shot (maybe game) I've ever seen at Moody.

I was fortunate enough to be at Moody and see them both, in 93 and here last night.

I call it a tie!

Well Nic is still the reigning undisputed Greatest Game Winner in Moody History-unless someone can come up with some more nominees. Probably need someone with Doc Hayes knowledge-I only caught his last 2-3 years

Hey, when we are talking great shots,

Does anyone remember a few years ago when Memphis came in to Moody ranked 3 or 4 in the nation and SMU played them close all night. With about one minute to go, Memphis hit a shot to put them up by 5.

SMU then dribbled down and Devon Pearson (anyone remember him?) stepped back about 4 feet behind the NBA 3 point line (almost standing out of bounds) and drained a 3 that was nothing but net.

Ultimately gave SMU a chance to take a game winning shot (which was partially blocked).

but hey, Devon made a clutch basket!

i saw them both also. 93 meant as much in real terms. This one means more in emotional terms. I go with the one tonight. To have a shot at redeeming us, and also see us get to the next level is more important to the school now than that was at the time.

Elsey very strangely transferred the next year - correct?

I definitely remember that game. It was the first game I ever brought my wife (then girlfriend) to. Huge part of the reason she's such a big SMU basketball fan today, because it made her want to come back to the next one. And then the next one. And pretty much every single one since then.

You're thinking of the wrong clutch 3. Elsey was not until 98 (or 99?) in Vegas at the WAC tourney, draining a game winning 3. He'd also hit a game winner in the regular season in the Thomas & Mack -- I know because I was living in Vegas at the time as was there for both. And yes, Elsey transferred to Baylor the next year. He was dead to me after that.

I was in school and at the game for the 93 championship too, but I honestly can't conjure up the memory of that game. Perhaps it was Chad Allen who hit that 3?

Mama Bouche wrote:Good call Stallion! That shot may have saved my marriage. You should have heard my spouse...I kept saying "have faith in my Bobby" (totally pointless in the context of the game) but to Mama it made perfect sense. My daughter, soon to be a Mustang herself loved my comment at the buzzer..."suck it you bunch of dope smoking hippies!" Living in Cali makes this so much sweeter and better yet I won some Pappy Van Winkle whiskey on a bet with a Cal alum in the office. Very entertaining. Watching replays of earlier rounds now. Very exciting times!

A top ten post, IMO.

The greatness of Gene Phillips hit a fall into the crowd, 25 foot plus prayer at the buzzer to beat Arkansas in 1971. Almost landed in my lap. Astounding ending, but not an especially meaningful game. Rydel was right by me, by the way.

I remember Bob Begert hitting a lay up at the buzzer to beat Texas, even though I am not sure if it was at Moody or not.

Begert's shot was at Waco. Played at a neutral arena as Texas and SMU tied for the championship.

Again, though the bad guys won, this shot deserves consideration:
