LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
Already facing an intriguing offseason, UNLV basketball coach Dave Rice is in the middle of more drama. Rice is considering accepting the coaching position at South Florida, which has offered a five-year contract for $1.2 million per year.
According to sources, the offer was extended within the past 24 hours. Rice is returning from an interview in Tampa, Fla., and could not be reached for comment.
It is expected he will meet with UNLV athletic director Tina Kunzer-Murphy tonight.
Sources indicated Rice was contacted by South Florida officials soon after the school rescinded an offer to Manhattan’s Steve Masiello, whose deal fell through after he failed a background check.
Rice’s contract at UNLV has three years remaining at $700,000 per year. A proposed two-year extension for Rice has not been forwarded to the Board of Regents.
The Rebels finished the season 20-13 and missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time in Rice’s three years.
If UNLV cannot offer a competitive contract to South Florida’s offer, Rice could depart, leaving Kunzer-Murphy to search for his replacement.
