Although my name implies that the majority of my hatred is directed towards the lobster or crab (whatever the hell he is), I think the root of this problem is the weirdo elf and the fact that Mario and Luigi need to reverse costumes considering Mario is taller than Luigi. They need to check their Nintendo measurables.

But in all seriousness, I think I am speaking on behalf of most student fans when I say that we do not want these figures representing our student body and our general fanhood. True fans don't need to dress up like complete fools in irrelevant outfits to support their team and the assertion that these individuals are somehow leading "the mob" is preposterous. Yes, they start chants on occasion, but no more than the rest of the student section, and as was previously asserted, if they were our "best fans" or even "true fans" they would be in attendance at almost all away games in costume regardless of their other commitments. My own father and numerous other people I know who don't go to SMU have commented regarding the lobster and other figures and wonder about their significance, and when I respond that there is none, their response is usually something along the lines of "oh, that's really weird." WHICH IT UNDOUBTEDLY IS. Wear an SMU jersey, an SMU shirt, a hat; support the team in a meaningful way, which doesn't leave the outside world thinking that SMU is a bunch of weirdos because we're not. Most of us are normal fans who will get after it and support our team, and guess what...actually make the trips to away games, still yell and scream just as much as the people in ridiculous costumes all the while not making our school look like a bunch of losers. Just my thoughts and rip me a new one for it, but I believe a lot more of the students feel this way than not.

My three closest friends are smu grads and I wouldn't have talked to them in college. Such a silly argument

There's a freaking AD that was seen by everyone watching NCAA Tourney games in which Ramon the Lobster and the Mob were there. Great promo for the school and I think they are hilarious!
When you graduate, nobody cares about this High School BS you guys fight/complain about. We actually need to make our school less snobby and more like Big 12 schools without sacrificing our class. Most people you will end up working with are from those schools and could care 3 facks about your snobby attitude.

Love the Lobster. GO MUSTANGS!

Well okay. The thread I started has taken some unexpected turns.

Maybe the collection plate should be passed around to buy some psychotherapy and Twinkies instead.

I would be willing to pony up for little trophies to award to all students who can prove perfect attendance at the Moody games. God I love 2014!

I'm just happy to see the asinine "fan snobbery" isn't limited to the old guys (read: alumni/PonyFans).

Nobody really thinks anyone else is a "better fan" than they are, so quit acting like that's the competition that matters. Just show up and support the team however the hell you want to. Our fanbase, or student body for that matter, is not some homogenous group of identical drones (false stereotypes aside), so why should we act like it?

But maybe the students could show up a bit earlier? +10 (utterly meaningless) fan points to anyone at the game 30 minutes before tipoff.

Make the university look dumb? B/c Ramon was on the news? B/c he is having a good time?

This thread is one of the worst ever. What's dumb is kids wearing jerseys that have nothing to do with SMU or school spirit. I really can't believe this S h i t - support your school, cheer for your team. Not that hard.

There are a few wet blankets in every group. I don't think there is any big division about this. 99 pct thinkit is funny so why not?

Next subject.

The costumes are not about promoting the team, so I see the point being made by these other students. If anything those costumes are soooooo SMU because it is the typical frat mentality. I am not laughing with them, I am laughing at them, which is ok too. If someone really wants to wear a costume, and help promote the team and the brand we are creating they should come decked out Godfather style looking like Joe Corleone or at least like the characters in [deleted] Tracy. That would promote the mob, and they could be called disciples or clones.

No, the costumes ARE about supporting the team by making it as zany as possible. That sort of thing throws the visiting teams off their game and gives our guys the mental edge. It isn't like they are wearing frat jerseys which are the epitome of shameless self-promotion (one step short of wearing shirts with their names on them)

This is the most SMU thread ever

I'm surprised he isn't going after the mob in general because they are cheering. SMU students don't cheer, it is too middle class

I guess we should only have fat heads of fraternity presidents. And by all means lets keep people like Garrett and Romo out. They have no association with SMU. Oh, and no more scores or stories in the DMN. It could be seen by a non alum or, gasp, an alum not associated with a fraternity.
