The notes in the paper today are interesting.

- Coach Bennett isn't sure if DeMyron Martin will start against the Aggies.
- WR Zack Sledge is starting this weekend, as is someone named Jackson Taylor (deep snapper).
- SMU might use a "spy" -- probably Alvin Nnabuife -- to shadow Reggie McNeal.
"What kind of weirdo school are they running over there in Fort Worth?"

BENNETT IS A MORON ~

Martin to start? Bennett not sure

12:37 PM CDT on Wednesday, September 14, 2005

By CALVIN WATKINS / The Dallas Morning News

UNIVERSITY PARK – Despite a college debut where he rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass, redshirt freshman DeMyron Martin of Allen wasn't given the starting running back job. However, he did practice with the first team Tuesday.

Coach Phil Bennett said the type of formation the Mustangs use to start Saturday's game at Texas A&M would determine if Martin starts. Cedrick Dorsey and Richuel Massey are the starters.

WR, long snapper lose their jobs
Chris Foster lost his spot as the starting slot receiver to Zack Sledge. Foster had four catches for 34 yards Saturday to go along with one dropped pass. Sledge had two catches for 17 yards. Both are possession-type receivers.

Also, with three missed field goal tries, Phil Bennett has changed long snappers. Freshman Jackson Taylor takes over for senior Brad Kieschnick. Bennett blamed low snaps as the cause for Chris McMurtray's missed field goals.

Briefly ...
QB Jerad Romo will get his second consecutive start. ... The defensive coaches haven't decided if they will put a spy on Texas A&M QB Reggie McNeal. Rover Alvin Nnabuife appears to be a possible choice because of his speed and tackling ability to shadow McNeal. ... The Mustangs' 21-10 win over the Horned Frogs marked the first time in three-plus seasons under Bennett they won a game when scoring less than 24 points. SMU is 1-29 in such games.

I think that the "starters" are indicated by the starting formation. The only reason he didn't decalre him a "starter" is because he wasn't sure what formation they would start the game in.

this is one time that having a couple of quick DB sized LBs might come in real handy in spying McNeil. I'm really not sure A&M can jam the ball down the throat anymore-that's just not what they do. Look at their running stats over the last few years and then subtract McNeil's scrambles. The Aggies probably average 100-120 yards rushing. Now the Aggies have better personnel at every position but its still not their game.

I am not predicting we will win, or anything crazy like that.

However, I do think that our defense actually matches up relatively well against A&M. Our weakness is going to be against power running teams. They spread it out, and pass first in order to set up the run. We are going to be able to play our 4-3 man/zone and use our safebackers (my new term) Nnabuife and McCray to spy a bit.

The key to our great pass defense thus far is that we have been pressuring the QB so much. Our secondary is improved, but the other teams haven't even been able to attempt deep balls because of our pressure. It will be interesting to see how our d-line performs this weekend, if we continue to blitz occasionally, and how much pressure we can put on McNeal.
