Storrs is not in the middle if Fairfield County so I wouldn't exactly describe it as affluent. Back when I was in school (yes, a long time ago) there were no weekend meal plans. Many, many students did not have enough money to buy food on the weekends. The line was long Monday mornings with starving students waiting for the cafeteria to open up.

I know they now have weekend meal plans, but I actually don't doubt there may be an issue.

that's for kids living off campus though-right. I'm glad these points are brought up though because there is a ridiculous amount of misinformation out there for people focusing on about 1% of the student athlete population

Don't forget about the grants that athletes get. Free money to buy whatever they want. Tired if this crap.

That's not true. Sorry, but they don't have money to spend wherever they want. Also, it is done differently for each campus but comes out to roughly the same in terms of purchasing power. I'm going to ask a few buddies tomorrow how it all worked because I've quite honestly forgotten but I know for fact that they don't just get money to buy whatever they want, especially off-campus.

Aren't there any other former athletes on here that can give some insight that have gone through the system recently?

yes they do when they live off campus I know. Our AD did a report delineating this one time and it was substantial-of course they need to pay rent and living expense. Plus most of the kids from moderate to poor backgrounds are entitled to Pell Grants which provides a significant amount too. Too much misinformation on this topic

Straight from the Hart discussion of living stipend

Wow my apologies, I'd completely forgotten that. If I'm not mistaken, rent is paid for with that stipend and what not. Also don't they forfeit on-campus meal plans as well? Like I said, I'm going to talk to a few that went through this recently because I don't remember it all.

OBF see my earlier comments. Stipend = discretionary spending cash, as in how you spend it is up to you. I know last semester two football players in my finance class explained the entire situation. I do not feel bad as at least 45 veteran students enjoy the benefit of a less than or similar amount. It is a voluntary situation. If it is a raw deal well we live in Merica, just quit.

I wonder what percentage of college aged parents give their kids that much for living expenses-I doubt many do

I do have a question though if Northwestern players, and SMU by the same standard, are employees then wouldn't that would mean that their tuition and benefits, $58,757 per the above link from Rick Hart 2013, are taxable income? :?:

The NCAA is just terrible articulating the facts especially when they get on TV before national media. Our AD did a great job explaining it. Takes a lot of fire out of the misinformation when facts are presented

I agree with you SMU Pony Mom. Also, Napier also did not come from a wealthy family. He is not grandstanding imo. I have heard stories like that before. Glad they won the national championship and he got the MVP.
