For my fb scholarship '06 through '10 I got around a $1600 a month stipend... I lived off campus and paid $1000 give or take for rent and bills... That left me $600 for leisure/clothes/food etc which wasn't that much.

They also give kids that live on campus like $1700 to buy stuff at the campus stores but not for those off campus.

I was fortunate to have parents that gave me quite a bit to cover my other expenses every month as well, but I could see if you are not very careful with your money how you would be short every month in the off season. In season you are traveling so much and having everything paid for so it is easier.

First thing I thought of when I heard about this.

Has Shabazz' mom been shown? Are you talking about Boatright's mom? She's shown a lot

She's been shown every tournament game but perhaps Shabazz made the comment to get people talking about it? While several have given personal examples from their experience at SMU, I'm sure every school is different. Maybe there are issues at UConn. He has people talking about it now and maybe that was his goal.

A bunch of y'all sound pretty ignorant. These athletes that take schools on tournament runs and bowls do more for the university in terms of exposure, than many of you can ever do for your alma mater. Y'all sound very snobby. You make fun of these athletes, but you want these athletes to come to your university and represent your college.

While I understand the argument that the university does a lot of the student athletes so they don't need a stipend, these aren't scrubs like the majority of football one D1-offer athletes that SMU gets, these are studs with multiple offers that could have gone to any college. How many of y'all had multiple colleges offers willing to pay full-ride to attend college? I think that they should receive a bigger stipend. While there are some that probably abuse the system, I think the majority are good kids that try there best to live within their means.

Even if you disagree with these athletes spending habits, please be more thoughtful because the same athletes you want to attend SMU do look at this forum. You don't want the athletes not to consider SMU because it has a stigma of being snobby and unwelcoming to others. I think you can make your point without sounding like an [deleted].

We had a dining hall and pretty much ample food at meals. Ran out sometimes. Got $10/month and loved it.

you sir, are the ignorant one. SMU has had plenty of great athletes that are in the Pros now that would've been highly publicized had they been on teams with a higher national profile than SMU (NOT SCRUBS). But I agree that the studs on their respective team should be compensated more than the bench warmers only if the school is profiting from their jerseys or likeness in adds etc. There are very few (< 1%) of athletes that should receive more money than their peers in the whole NCAA though.

Like someone said before, I wish we had more 4-5 stars for football and less diamond in the roughs, not saying we shouldn't recruit diamond in the roughs, but I want the football team to go after the best like basketball. None of our current bball prospects have only one D1 offers. Please stop living in the past. I'm not trying diminish the accomplishments of those in the Pros, I'm saying that as SMU tries to transition to get more high profile athletes, I hope the people on this forum don't offend athletes from attending SMU.

There is still a negative stigma in many communities in the DFW about SMU, saying someone's mother shouldn't attend their last year's championship run or that maybe they should get less tattoos looks pretty ignorant. Napier seems like a model 4-year student-athlete and I'm not going to belittle him in order to make myself feel better. Shoot if it was between missing a few meals and letting my mother come see some of my last college games, that would be an easy choice for me.

Just because Napier was a great athlete doesn't mean that his statement was accurate and/or fair to Uconn.

Take a look at how Uconn treats its football players. http://www.ctpost.com/uconn/article/Blo ... 360023.php

You cannot tell me that Uconn doesn't have similar facilities in place for a Basketball team that has won 4 titles in 16 years.

I agree with Stallion. I know more now based on the facts, AND I think all of it should be increased. The formula can be figured out, but I'm for whatever (a) fairly compensates those contributing to the top line of the AD revenue (b) reduces power and control of the NCAA over individual programs.

Personally, I always lived on campus and received a Pell grant (parents were lower middle class, they didn't have any money to give so I was on my own in that department). It was tough (Sunday nights SUCKED! mostly because I was TERRIBLE at managing money back then - never had to before because I didn't have any - new experience for me), but I WAS able to get an old beat up used car eventually and was lucky enough to land some good internships later in my college career. But, again, it wasn't much in terms of compensation. So there were some extremely lean years no doubt. What KILLED me was seeing all these kids who NEVER worked, but drove around in expensive cars, lived in nice apartments and ALWAYS had money. Ah, I was quickly awakened to the real world where life is not fair. But that "hunger" just made me work harder (the bitterness took a bit longer to work off). :-)
