Donald Sterling banned from NBA for life!!

Postby TyDerby » Tue Apr 29, 2014 2:02 pm

I know this has nothing to do with SMU, but seeing an owner banned for life is not something that happens everyday.

Bravo Adam Silver.

Great day for the NBA.

At his age that amounts to 5 or 6 years...they should ban him from dating girls 40 years younger than him. Now that would be punishment.

Good job by the commish to take him out.

lmao...my buddy sent me a text wanting to buy the franchise if they sell, he inquired whether the girl comes with the franchise or not.

I'm glad Silver did this. I'm half concerned that he will be removed as an owner based on something he said. As much as I HATE what he said, I agree with Cuban in that it is a slippery slope. Hell, the Constitution even protects freedom of speech no matter how narrow-minded and disgusting it is. Will be interesting to see the outcome, if he does get ousted, I believe it opens a whole new can of worms in the future with this regard. That said, I would love to see him give up ownership and sell the team without a vote having to take place.

he should have just voluntarily given formal control to a family member when this whole thing went down. easiest for everyone.

Freedom of Speech includes the freedom to make a fool of oneself. There is no governmental restraint on his freedom of speech. Looks like a matter of contract to me since it appears NBA owners made a business decision based on NBA Bylaws. (Guess I ought to confirm that-haven't had time-but this was an ownership decision right-Looks like forced sale by owners is next step.) He was in heavy financial do-do anyway with just about every major sponsor rejecting what came out of his mouth based on his Freedom to Speak. I find it delightfully refreashing

I'll play devil's advocate here to some extent....

First of all, the NBA can do whatever they want. Frankly, I think Sterling should have been pushed out of the Clippers' ownership structure years ago after his settlement of a housing discrimination suit where he was accused of encouraging his employees not to rent to Black and Hispanic tenants. See here: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4187729

On the scale of crappy things Donald Sterling has done in his life like practicing housing discrimination, evicting elderly tenants who were ill, and cheating on his wife, telling his mistress in a private conversation not to post pictures with minorities seems pretty tame in comparison to me, at least in terms of damage done to the victims. Of course, we live in a world today where the outrage industry is active 24/7 and people are always looking to point the finger at someone else and yell "Bad!" in order to feel better about themselves. Call it "Trial by TMZ." That's where were at as a society in 2014.

Also, one last thing- have we just completely skipped over the fact that his mistress actually violated the law by taping their conversations without his knowledge? Is that just okay and fine and dandy nowadays, as long as the scapegoat is rich and easy to hate and the outrage industry is on your side?

Also, how the [deleted] was Donald Sterling being awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the NAACP next month? Can we please confirm once and for all that the NAACP is a complete joke with the best interests of no one in mind?

Yeah blame it on the "outrage machine" if it makes you feel better. Very Fox-News-ish

Last time I looked 30-40 of the largest corporations in America had independently determined within 24 hours that sponsoring a racist moran was not in their own best business interest

Why do you want to handcuff the ability of independent businessmen to make a business decision on who they want to sponsor and do business with? Sounds like the free enterprise system to me

Where did I say I wanted to? If you had read the third sentence I wrote, I said Sterling should have been pushed out of the NBA years ago. If I owned a company, I would have stopped sponsoring the Clippers after the housing discrimination settlement.

I've known for years that Sterling was a racist POS. Welcome to the party, Stallion. We've missed you.

According to ESPN sources, he knew he was being taped.

Actually, it's not old news since it just broke today but I can see why you would make that post since your views might just concur with Sterlings'.

Just looking at some of the overtones of his other posts in the past. But I did say "might." Might being probably over 90%.
