Time for Tackling drillsWhen did we forget how to tackle.
don't remember a game in my life where SMU gave up so many yards AFTER broken tackles. I'd estimate about 250-300 yards after an SMU man should have made a tackle. What's even more concerning is all those plays on the sidelines where we didn't even need to tackle but simply push guys out of bounds. But you know that's what happens when you play a team with athletes who can take it to the house. And Make no mistakes about it-those were some big-time 4.3-4.4 speedsters and super athletes making those plays for A&M. The athletes on SMU's team that might be able to do that at SMU don't even get on the field. Catching 5 yard passes is nice but at some point we have to get guys on the field like Henderson, Turner, Givens, and Devin Lowery. I am perfectly aware that these guys are making mistakes-inexperienced players usually do but we simply do not have the athletes on the field right now and particularly at the offensive skill positions who can make big plays. I'd rather lose with guys with the upside potential to turn this program around than putter around with guys who can't make big plays. Did Columus Givens even get on the field? Why do we take redshirts off players we don't intend to play consistently?
I know I was spending a lot of time in the concession line for water, but I thought Givens dropped another TD pass in Q3?
Yes he got on the field. He ran a sweep around end once and once again he DROPPED a catchable ball on a deep route. Lowery, Turner and Henderson all played. What game were you watching?
Well I'll admit I did something I've NEVER DONE. My son was flushed red and was about to pass out from the heat. After I went downstairs at halftime and saw all those people being treated by medical personnel I didn't really think it was worth it after it got to 52-8. Got to make sure the Pony grows up to be a Mustang so disregard anything I said after it was 52-8.
Columbus Givens has now dropped 2 home run balls but at least he got behind the defense on those two occasions. Maybe 3rd time will be the charm and the rest will be history as we discover a new deep threat.
Stallion is right...A$M had superior athletes who were consistently a step faster and stronger than our guys...but McNeil made some perfect passes because we often had a defender only one step behind. Anything but a perfect thro gets batted down or even picked. I was very disappointed in our tackling...guys just throwing a shoulder instead of wrapping up. That to me was a sign of "quitting". When I say quitting, I mean our guys lost their concentration once they knew this one was out of reach. They didn't play with the same heart they showed against TCU but that's only human nature to not be playing your guts out down 30-40 pts
I noticed on several plays that the first defender to the ball carrier tried to strip the ball instead of wrapping up the player and tackling him. I'm all for trying to striip the ball but shouldn't the first defender to the ball wrap him up? If the ball carrier is still standing when the second defender gets there, then he can try to strip the ball. We gave up a lot of yards on the several plays I noticed where we unsuccessfully tried to strip the ball and missed the tackle.
The Givens drop was painful, but what was impressive was the way he got open. First, he's got the wheels -- there's no argument about that. But he shook a DB with the slightest little shimmy with his shoulders -- that guy nearly spun the wrong way in reaction to the fake. And if what I've read is true, this was simply instinctive on his part. Isn't it true that he's never played receiver before this year? Trust me, that guy is going to make plays for the Ponies, and a lot of them.
He dropped one pass and had a finger on an overthrown ball right after he dropped the home run. He does have great speed, he needs to carry the football around with him this week, sleep with it, carry it to class, to dinner and perhaps, he'll remember to catch it first, and then run.
