2015 Football Commitments

Postby panhandle_pony » Wed May 07, 2014 2:16 pm

It seems in previous years we garnered verbal commits as early as March and April. Should I be concerned?

It's the lame duck effect at work and yes you should be very concerned. Most started to become concerned about our recruiting in Dec 2011 when all that unpleasantness transpired.

should have been concerned earlier when one hotshot recruiter from LA was extending half our offers 2,000 miles from home. What could possibly go wrong?

I don't think you guys get it. Without the large meeting rooms and IPF, how can we really compete against other D1 teams?

A lot of the 3rd and 4th tier players will come to the SMU camps in the month of June and they will probably get a few commits then.

No worries. I have a confidential source who says we're dominating the Houston area.

If by dominating you mean we visited Houston, then yes you are correct.

I would be concerned that historically, we held our camps later than others, and pulled in several commitments after the camps ended in May and June.

This year, our camps moved up and we didn't get those immediate commitments.

There are basically three stages in recruiting now, I believe. Stage 1 was last Fall, offer the Juniors either before the big schools get to see them (through coaching relationships) or because they are great. Stage 2, see them in camp and make an offer before their senior year. Stage 3, look for the breakout players and offer them ASAP.

We have never done well in stage 1 under June. When he first came in, we did well in stage 2, because we offered players who fit the system in camp and got immediate commitments.

A couple of years ago, all of the other schools moved their camps earlier, so we got the leftovers and more of our commitments fell to stage 3.

Again, it looks like we are going to be pretty dependent on Stage 3 this year. We moved the camps up, but I think that 1) a lot of coaches are identifying practice players and offering them in stage 1 instead of waiting on camps, so we are missing that boat, and 2) I think players get offers from us after camps but are holding their options open in case something better comes along in the fall.

That is my guess on why we haven't gotten more early commitments over the last couple of years. The rush to build relationships with the coaches in Dallas and Houston probably is not going to have a drastic impact on this class, but hopefully it gets us in the phase 1 game for next year's class.

Is the Houston "blitz" that JJ and crew were on now over?

We should do an experiment and only recruit players from far west Texas and eastern New Mexico. Let's create an all-star team from that region and see what happens.

Lots of hidden gems in Clovis, Farmington, El Paso, Lubbock, and Amarillo. Same with Port Isabel, Kingsville, and Port Mansfield. We can't keep missing out on those kids.

Marfa also plays football. Same with Sanderson.

Always wondered why we did not get more recruits from out that way. Surely TTech does not get them all. I grew up out there and there are some legit players. Just more spread out and not blitzed by the media as big meto areas. Like everything else in recruiting, it would take effort.

there's is like 8-10 good prospects in West Texas. Its a vast wasteland for recruiting these days.
