Sorry dude, I'm calling BS on your statement. First off, I will disclose that Jason is an old friend from high school and we have been friends for almost 25 years. Jason doesn't have an agenda here. If he had an agenda against SMU, he wouldn't be writing positive things about the program, which he has done in the past. Heck, he said we'd be just fine without Keith if he had left. Both Jason and I have had some very frank conversations about the program in the past and he's happy to see that we are finally making relevance in basketball after being a relative doormat for the past 20 years. The other thing about Jason is that he's very well connected in college basketball circles and he doesn't write stuff hoping that it sticks. He has an old school reporters mentality to report the facts and not hearsay which some reporters tend to do. He never said he was leaving, only that he was contemplating it. Honestly, it doesn't surprise me that Keith -and his handlers- would consider it. When you think about it, he's been "the man" where ever he's played. When kids like him that have always been catered to all their lives get that dose of reality that they aren't "the man" then things like this happen. Fortunately, the Godfather was able to get him to come to his senses.

I'm not saying that King knew it wasn't true or that he knowingly had an agenda. I'm saying that Scott Drew likely placed this rumor with several sources that he knew King would talk to. Drew most likely was the first to tell him about this rumor. That is what Scott Drew does. King being a Baylor alum made him a good fit for Drew's plan.

It's no secret that Keith's camp thought he should get more playing time. But it is also no secret that despite that, Keith was/is very happy at SMU. The speed of Keith's denial of this rumor certainly suggests (I'll give you that it doesn't prove) that Keith wasn't seriously contemplating leaving.

I'll venture to guess that had King been able to contact Keith before his publishing deadline, this would have never been reported.

But you can't prove any of this, can you?[/quote]

I have a source close to Keith quoted just above that says Keith NEVER thought about leaving.

The Drew thing is a supposition (that is what the word "likely" suggests), based on some of his past tactics. If you notice, I presented it as a likely scenario rather than the absolute truth. Drew is in several recruiting battles with SMU, and he knows that any instability at SMU is to his advantage.

I'm also not saying that we wouldn't do the same thing if we felt we might gain an advantage by doing so.

You should not have gone there. That stuff doesn't need to be articulated on a board. We all understand the ugliness that goes on behind the scenes. Common sense should have been your ally. It wasn't.

Not sure why you are trying to scold me. As far as I know, we are both adults, in a board whose membership and readership are also (mostly) adults. You have consistently treated others as children since you rejoined (welcome back, by the way, as we did miss you).

Far worse has been intimated on this board. I added the last sentence because it is likely that if I hadn't, you (or someone else) would have replied with the sentiments expressed within. You know as well as anyone else that when you post on this board, you cover your bases. So if your issue is with that last sentence, you know that common sense is why it is there as well as why it is carefully worded to not suggest that we would do the same while not suggesting that we wouldn't do the same.

I probably could have worded that differently. I just believe if that we are even going to make some kind of suggestion -- the use of qualifiers notwithstanding -- the third-party won't take it that way and will run with it.

So I'll take the brunt for poor approach.

I just don't like for us to go there. Just my opinion.

As for Jason King, I think he is quality journalist. And I will take him at his word that if he felt confident from what he was hearing from people he's worked with , he went with it. The unfortunate thing is that we immediately get into a mode where someone's affiliation is used against him rather than his credentials.

if this was SMU about 3 years ago, no one would care where King went to school. Now, that SMU has trying to build a championship caliber program, people will automatically go for the college affiliation where the journalist went to school and immediately use that as a weapon. I'm not singling you out, Calallen. Many people do that.

But I guess that's the world we live in.

My fault on the above. Time to move forward, I hope.
