If you look at some other kids who are 4 stars (but not on any national list) and they don't have any big time offers, that should tell you that something else is in play because I truly believe these services, who are typically pretty close in their ratings, would not have these ratings if the kids just flat out stunk.
Not pertaining to Kearns but academics are a part of it, they could also be coming off major injuries (so schools are slow to pull the trigger and may want kids to camp to see if they are really healthy) or it could be the caliber of competition they are facing in high school that earns the hesitation.
There's a kid in south texas who had committed to texas but is not anymore because of the coaching change. I can't remember his name, but he's a 4 star and doesn't have any offers I think.
I agree that these things are head scratchers. I'm not defending SMU here. Maybe the staff is taking a chance on him with this offer. I don't know. I'm simply offering a reason as to why something looks the way it does. But we've also seen where some of their other QB arrivals have been pretty awful. So who knows.
