Seems to me like the media types are racing one another to prove who can be outraged first and most. I can't remember another time in recent history when the media's coverage of an issue was so out of touch with prevailing public opinion:

Q15 Do you think the Washington Redskins should
change their nickname, or not?
Do 18%
Do not 71%
Not sure 11%

The following was an email sent to a Chicago paper. Interesting comments and most likely will manage to kill this thread. Oh well, just my .02 worth. :P

Dear Mr. Page...

I always love your articles. and I generally agree with them. I would suggest, as in an email I received, they change the name to the "Foreskins" to better represent their community, ...paying tribute to the [deleted] heads in Congress.

Here are some other politically correctness to consider:

I agree with our Native American population . I am highly insulted by
the racially charged name of the Washington Redskins. One might argue
that to name a professional football team after Native Americans would
exalt them as fine warriors, but nay, nay. We must be careful not to
offend, and in the spirit of political correctness and courtesy, we
must move forward.

Let's ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves and the
Cleveland Indians. If your shorts are in a wad because of the
reference the name Redskins makes to skin color, then we need to get
rid of the Cleveland Browns.

The Carolina Panthers obviously were named to keep the memory of
militant Blacks from the 60's alive. Gone. It's offensive to us
white folk.

The New York Yankees offend the Southern population. Do you see a
team named for the Confederacy? No! There is no room for any
reference to that tragic war that cost this country so many young
men's lives.

I am also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic religion
among our sports team names. Totally inappropriate to have the New
Orleans Saints, the Los Angeles Angels or the San Diego Padres.
Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who raped and
pillaged. We are talking about the horrible Oakland Raiders, the
Minnesota Vikings, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Pittsburgh
Pirates!

Now, let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong message to
our children. The San Diego Chargers promote irresponsible fighting
or even spending habits. Wrong message to our children .

The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants promote obesity, a
growing childhood epidemic . Wrong message to our children.

The Cincinnati Reds promote downers/barbiturates . Wrong message to
our children.

The Milwaukee Brewers---well that goes without saying. Wrong
message to our children.

So, there you go. We need to support any legislation that comes out
to rectify this travesty, because the government will likely become
involved with this issue, as they should. Just the kind of thing
the do-nothing congress loves.

As a die hard Oregon State fan, my wife and I, with all of this in mind, it might also make some sense to change the name of the Oregon State women's athletic teams to something other than "the Beavers".

My thoughts exactly. The Braves, Indians, Chiefs, and Seminoles will all be next on the chopping block

I disagree. Braves and Chiefs are names that simply designate titles of nobility within the Native American community. Indians is a little awkward on the political correctness scale, but it isn't offensive. Seminoles is just identifying a specific tribe; it isn't mocking or degrading it in any way.

I would bet those names all survive.

Redpony, that just made my day

Re the Seminoles, they have an actual member of the Seminole tribe named Renegade that rides on a horse and throws a spear in the ground before their games. They're not just "ok" with the team name, it's an honor to them. They feel honored that such a successful program would want to use their name. But I'm sure some white talk show host will come along and say that it bothers them too and they just don't understand how offensive that is.

So tired of people trying to control everyone. Just leave me and everyone else the [deleted] alone.

But the National Congress of American Indians, which bills itself as the nation's most representative American Indian and Alaska Native advocacy organization, has long called for the abolition of all such team names in pro sports.

"I say they're all equally offensive," Blackhorse said. "They all promote stereotypes of native people for profit. And that's not right."

And it probably warrants mentioning that a former president of the National Congress of American Indians, Walter Wetzel, actually designed the current Redskins logo.

If they can get teams to change their names, then it just makes it that much easier to sue them since they will have admitted their wrong. Not a $$$$$ grab or anything. Native Americans are still Americans, so that means they get to partake in our wonderful tradition of suing everyone, for anything from spilling coffee on ourselves, to not being intelligent enough to not hop in a bathtub with a plugged in toaster.

Let's eliminate all Indian mascots so we can finally forget native people ever existed.

ECM, you are not helping...you are clouding the issue with facts....this is an emotionally driven issue to so many...get onboard...

With so many relevant issues that our nation and leaders face (and that our media can report on), the attention goes to a mascot name of a pro sports team in Washington....and the fact that Senator Reid will not be attending games until the name changes to take out the offending portion.

Leadership. Thank goodness we don't get what we deserve.

I think they should do the same as an Arkansas State alum suggested when they had to drop the name Indians. Change the name to Engines and have a Native American riding on a locomotive. They could keep the same mascot and logo. Just add a train.
