Re: OT: Redskins trademark revoked
Incorrect, the horse is Renegade, and the "Seminole" riding him is an FSU student that is NOT required to be a tribe member (and probably never has been one). Not to pick on you, but people always point to FSU as the standard-bearer for how to 'handle' this situation. In reality, FSU fans still do the "tomahawk chop" in the stands, along to the band playing the "war chant." I have a feeling the Seminoles don't really care, because it brings attention to their tribe and their business. It is a tribe of about 2000 people that isn't hurting for money: According to a tribal audit, in 2005 the tribe took in $1.1 billion in revenue. from http://bleacherreport.com/articles/4797 ... ef-osceola : "Each Osceola of the past has fit the requirements of being male, maintaining a grade point average (of at least a 3.0) and being of high moral character. He must also have exceptional horse riding ability, and more specifically, must learn to ride without a saddle. The same routine displayed today was used 29 years ago. The current Chief Osceola is Josh Halley, an FSU senior, and an accounting and finance major. He is the 13th person to carry on the tradition since it began in 1978, and this season is his third year riding as Chief. " Sent from my Motorola brick.

Same here, Bump #Beat Clemson
Re: OT: Redskins trademark revokedI hereby start a petition to change the name of the Dallas Cowboys, to the Dallas Rednecks. Seriously, not sure where the problem starts and ends in some cases. I do not see the name redskins as always having a negative conotation. Could it at some point, sure. But not in the case of the Washington Redskins. I mean, what team would name itself something that is negative. The team uses the term Redskin in the most honoring of ways... they named their team after it.
In 2005, McMurry University in Abilene Texas was forced by the NCAA to change its Mascot from Indian. They were up until 2005 called the McMurry Indians. They are now referred to as the War Hawks. Is Indian more racist than Cowboy? Color me officially confused. ![]() Last edited by smusportspage on Thu Jun 19, 2014 11:15 am, edited 1 time in total.
Re: OT: Redskins trademark revokedThat name hurts us. The wrong imagery hurts us. Dr. Anton Treuer says a lot of the same things about American Indians that I say too. He and I both have Princeton degrees and doctorates. Of course most of y'all are not really interested to know about us but you can read his books and find him speaking on youtube.
It's hard to believe how many still haven't a clue about us. Many shouldn't say anything about us because it is not correct information. That word was used as a racial slur against one of my ancestors by the US government when those guys killed her in Boggy Depot, Oklahoma in the 1890s. That is when some of my family left and some stayed in Oklahoma. I believe if it were a black issue there would not be such a push back. I didn't want to take time out of my World Cup time for this.
Re: OT: Redskins trademark revokedYou using the term "y'all" hurts me. My white southern ancestors were put down and called uneducated rednecks for using such slang.

Re: OT: Redskins trademark revokedThere you go.
Re: OT: Redskins trademark revokedPolitical correctness again run a mock ... I was also going to point out the Abilene (McM University) example as even an Indian reference can chaps some folks too. If I'm not mistaken "Redskins" is not in reference to skin color. I believe the original reference is centered on the fact that Native Americans would dawn war paint before battle back in the day ... and "Red" was a primary color. The reference was to indicate a tribe (team) coming to together as one group with pride to do battle against an adversary ... hence the football reference. I have a very close friend and business associate that is 100% Native American ... he thinks this whole thing is ridiculous (yes, that's just one persons opinion). Another note; My 82 year old dad (former Post Commander) is a member of an American Legion Post in SO CA. The Post and the local Tribe (chief) have a very close relationship, they give A LOT to the American Legion Post. I happened to be visiting my dad, and we were at the post. About thirty minutes into my visit the Chief walks in, and my dad introduces me to him. Great guy, had a nice conversation with him ... He was wearing a Redskins visor. No joke, and I didn't ask.
I'm not cold hearted, and certainly not an advocate of going out an offending folks/groups. While the letter that was posted regarding many teams names was comical, there was a thread of truth and irony in it ... we live in a world where someone is always going to be offended by anything and everything. So, where do you draw the line between offensive an overreaching. I think the fuss about the "Redskins" name has less to do with folks truly being offended by the name and more to do with other motives. That's just MO Although we seem to have little trouble these day trashing and stereotyping Christians ... the South and Southerners with little outrage from the PC police.
Re: OT: Redskins trademark revoked
You're completely right re renegade. No idea what I was thinking when I wrote that, because I remember having to explain Osceola and Renegade to a few girls during the national championship game.... Woops. The Seminole Indians do design and approve the costume that they wear though. Side note, blacker report still sucks and I still don't care about the word redskin. Re: OT: Redskins trademark revokedAs a Redskin fan and according to most polls around here, the vast majority of people in this area want to keep the name. If forced to change it, I think they should change the name to Bureaucrat-Nazis. Put the swastika on their helmets. Change the colors of their uniforms to tan. Hail to the Nazi's, Hail Victory, Brownshirts on the warpath, fight for old DC. Or perhaps as South Park suggested the Bureaucrat [deleted] and put a picture of our current President on their helmets. That's not generally offensive, only offensive to our current Bureaucrat in Chief.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: OT: Redskins trademark revokedAs Elizabeth Warren is a Cherokee Elder I think we should defer to her as whether or not the name "Redskin" is an effront to her sensibilities. I mean, she, Harry Reid and Barry have nothing better to occupy their time than these important domestic quandaries. Or, we could go global and ask the leaders of ISIS about the word "Redskins".
