Official OOC ScheduleModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: Official OOC ScheduleSooner or later (and whether you like it or not) trying to hold on to rivalries is going to be bad for business in the world of big-time college athletics.
Texas and Texas A&M have moved on after 90+ years. Nebraska and Oklahoma moved on after 80+ years. Michigan and Notre Dame are watching their rivalry dissolve. This will be the trend. Although I believe SMU will do what it can to maintain the rivalry with TCU, I also believe that SMU has to think about its future with TCU not in it. Don't think TCU has given thought to the same about a future without SMU in it. At some point, their leadership may consider what real benefit there is to playing SMU (if it hasn't already). The bottom line is that SMU needs to be prepared for that kind of future with the volatility surrounding college athletics.
Re: Official OOC Schedule
Not sure how it's bad for business for us...it sells out everytime TCU comes to Ford. If anything they'd be the ones to drop it, but they seem like having an away OOC game every other year that's easy for their plans to travel to as well- Del Conte said as much last year, that they were content with one P5 opponent, one FCS opponent, and us every year as their OOC. I think it would be a shame if we ever stopped playing TCU in football for an extended period of time. 2005 PonyFans.com Rookie of the Year Award Recipient
Re: Official OOC Schedule
Well, Michigan is going to be just an average team this year because they lost so much and that game in Ann Arbor should be a gimme. But where in the world is UTEP on this schedule? And why isn't UTEP coming to Moody? Geez, Larry. What's the matter with you? Should you even be coaching this team?[/quote] You slay so many strawmen.
Re: Official OOC ScheduleI prefer to view it as addressing the absurd with the absurd. That's exactly what happened here with the gang of 30 and their whine and cheese fest.
Re: Official OOC ScheduleI totally agree with ECM. How in the world is playing TCU bad for business? In basketball, they will draw more ticket sales and interest than playing any other non-ranked, non-power school. In football, it is a guaranteed sellout and a game against a quality team. BIGPony, please explain what you mean by playing rivals is bad for business? That maybe the craziest thing you've ever posted on here. Texas/OU, Michigan/Ohio St, Duke/UNC, Alabama/Auburn, Florida/FSU, USC/UCLA are HUGE draws for college sports - these games are money makers, produce big tv ratings, and get the fan bases jacked up like nothing else. If UT and A&M played again the "business" that would come from the game would be through the roof.

Re: Official OOC ScheduleAlso, our game against TCU is likely the first or second highest rated TV game we appear in all season. Good for exposure for us, too.
I'd love for B1G to give us his list of replacement teams he'd rather see us play 2005 PonyFans.com Rookie of the Year Award Recipient
Re: Official OOC ScheduleWe should really go back and calculate what our football attendance actually is without those rivals like TCU, A&M, Baylor and Tech? 14-15,000? in a good year 12,000-13,000 in some prior years. In basketball now that season tickets have firmed up scheduling a local rival doesn't make as much sense SINCE the tickets are already sold. No net financial gain like the HUGE financial gain by playing local rivals in Football. National P5's aren't going to come play in Ford anyway. In case you haven't noticed there have been about 15 games in DFW without any DFW team in recent years. We can't pay them a millions of dollars to play in a 32,000 seat stadium when they can make 8-10 times more just by scheduling an extra home game or playing a Jerry World. The Economics of most of these arguments is off especially all those proposing wild scheduling off far off P5 powers in Football. 1) they aren't interested for the money we got and 2) we aren't interesting for the lack fans in the area they got. That's why we play regional rivals which has been financially beneficial to all Texas teams. These old SWC rivalries are putting butts in seats across the state

When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
Re: Official OOC ScheduleReading to me that SMU needs TCU more than TCU needs SMU. Reads to me line desperation and that we don't want to acknowledge that this could happen.
Got it, thanks
Re: Official OOC Schedule
I've always thought that in addition to TCU, we should also try to schedule P5 teams at Ford who would travel well and like exposure in Dallas but maybe couldn't sell out a mammoth venue like Jerryworld: Ole Miss Miss St Vanderbilt Mizzou Iowa Northwestern Cal... to name a few. TCU has Ohio State coming to Ft. Worth in like 2018 or something- and their stadium only holds about 10K more than Ford when you account for standing room. 2005 PonyFans.com Rookie of the Year Award Recipient
Re: Official OOC Schedule
I would be up for scheduling Cal in Basketball and Football home and homes. Having them in the NIT was fun and they seem like a good fit for us as their programs are similar to ours right now.
Re: Official OOC Schedule
Are you going to answer the question, why are rivalries bad business for major college sports? Or just keep whining. SMU-12 NCAA appearances, 1 Final Four

Re: Official OOC Schedule
It reads that way because it's true. It's a damn miracle they kept us playing us this long. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: Official OOC Schedule
Why isn't utep in moody? Michigan is horrible.
Re: Official OOC Schedule^ True, but we're an easy schedule for them, too. They don't want to load up on tough OOC games with their Big 12 schedule and Dallas is an easy road trip for their fan base. I think it's pretty mutually beneficial .

Re: Official OOC Schedule
If Patterson wasn't 11-2 lifetime vs SMU or whatever it is and more like 6-5, this series would have been dropped. He needs all the winnable games he can get. And now that TCU is in the Big 12, he'll welcome this game as long as he's winning it. Should the tide ever turn he'll run to Del Conte to kill it.
