JoePa always said that as well. And he did. Well, until he was fired and died.

With the answer to the first question, it's obvious he doesn't want to be here. He'll coach 3-5 more years "somewhere"

I could see him catching on somewhere as an OC if we can him after this season

He talks about attachment to his players and says that those relationships make it hard to move. Seems to me that he's simply admitting he doesn't know what the future holds, but he doesn't sound like he wants out. It also isn't one of those "I want to coach where I am and never leave", either. Just unsure. FWIW, I don't want out of my current job, but I don't know if I'll have my current job in 3-5 years, either.

Good point, Snob. I never understood all the "he's gone after one year of the extension" talk. IF the contract had been written to allow that, how would any of us know it? Hart wouldn't share that with anyone. JJ wouldn't share that with anyone. There have been a lot of people saying that as if they had sat down and read the contract themselves. I'm not saying it wasn't written that way, but I just never bought it because I can't see how anyone would have access to that information.

I think the expectation is he's out if we're not in a bowl game this year, and a lot of people think a bowl is unlikely. My understanding is that the extension was written to allow SMU a pretty easy (read: cheap) way out to get rid of him if 2014 is a disappointment.

Right. I think that's what a lot of people think. I just can't figure out who, among the people with actual knowledge of what is and is not in the contract, would leak that to anyone at all. Maybe you're absolutely right. I'm not as wired in up there as a lot of people. But it just seems like an idea that neither side would ever leak.

I think SMU would "leak" it to quell some of the outrage over the extension and assure people that June wouldn't actually be here through 2017 if we suck this year.

We couldn't buy JJ out after 2013, and for PR/recruiting purposes we couldn't let him go into the last year of his contract without an extension, so we had him sign a paper tiger.

Do you see yourself finishing your career with SMU?

"I don’t know how to answer that. I’m probably going to coach three to five more years somewhere. I get really attached to my kids, so it’s hard to move, it’s very difficult for me. Most of the kids come because you’re the coach. So they made the commitment, and I always talk about commitment. So it’s very hard to move."

Translation

"I don't really like it at SMU but no one else will pay me anything close to what I'm making so the plan is to hold on as long as they'll let me. Problem is I'm on thin ice with the new AD because he actually expects me to work hard and win championships. If I get canned I'll go coach somewhere else, retirement isn't cheap you know."

Good publicity for SMU that he spoke at this event. We are becoming more and more visible over the last 18 months.

if JJ secures an invitation to another of the very bottom bowls again, something with a 6-6 record and that justifies an extension. then you can expect a just good enough mentality for football for years to come. What a contrast from LB's goal, to win a national championship versus the Hawaii Bowl.

If he will continue to flippin' recruit then I don't have a problem with this. Hopefully he has woken up and gotten hungry again somehow.
