Let me let ya'll in on something very sad. In 1981-82, I was an elementary school student in San Marcos. At the time, I followed SWTSU as the local team and watched them play to the DII title game (coincidentally played in McAllen). Alas, I followed those Bobcats when I couldn't watch my oft-probation bound Mustangs, whom I began following living in Dallas in 1978. SWTSU was fun to watch at the time, but I pined for Texas Stadium and REAL football, like the highlights I'd see on "Football Texas Style" on Channel 39. SWTSU and SMU on the same level? Playing the same opponent in consecutive weeks? I'd have never, ever, EVER fathomed it. And now...my wife asks, "...wait a sec, that's where we were Saturday, right? Who is Texas State? Didn't know there was a Texas State..."

I've been telling ALL of ya'll about the Div. 1-AA schools (*NOT* Div. II...that's another category below!) like Sam Houston State, Southwest Texas State, Stephen F. Austin, Northwestern, McNeese, etc. for a long time.

Texas State changed its name a couple of years ago because - as the school president put it - they didn't want to be known as a 'regional school' any longer (formerly Southwest Texas State). They also had visions - at the time - of moving up to Div. 1-A status. Whether that will happen now is still a big question mark.

Bear in mind that the Aggie$ only had 3 days to prepare for the Bobkitties of TSU3. They're predicted by some to win the SLC this year.

Now that I've got that off my chest...GO MUSTANGS! BEAT THE GREEN WAVE!

Are you a Sam Houston grad posting as a Mustang?

TSU3? Thats a Sam Houston State thing. But so funny, we are the third TSU in the state. Let me hide my head in shame.

Bobkitties........Okay, well I know my bobcatkitties walk off the field with a lot of respect tonight. How did the Mustangs(I won't jack up your name) walk off last week? And as far as SHSU goes I won't waste my time.

See you Mustangs next year!

I wish we had a few of those student-athletes. That QB was cool under pressure.

Rick: I'll forgive you since you're a newbie to this board. Yes, I'm a Sam Houston alum but a BIG supporter of SMU. Family history.

I applaud your Bobcats for the showing against the Aggie$. And as far as the SHSU v TSU game or SMU v TSU game next season, we can discuss that over at www.katfans.com. I'm the poster over there with the 'pointy ears'.

I don't really understand the logic here...we've fallen because we share an opponent with Texas State? That's like saying the Univ. of Miami has fallen because they saw FSU playing close to the Citadel the week after their loss.

Texas aTm is the one playing texas state, not us, so who cares if "that's the same place we played last week."

Duh! probably because the Division 1-AA team kept their game with the Aggies 44 points closer than dear old SMU-just 5 days after SMU played them on the same field.

Also, without the incentive to prove themselves after a loss and two weeks to prepare?

Pal there were 27,000 students at the game. The actual attendance was close to 55,000.

Here's the logic.

1982: SWTSU: Toughest opponent & rival: Texas A&I
1982: SMU: Nat'l top 5, Heisman candidate, future NFL coach, everyone knows who they are; wins vs. Texas, aTm, Pitt, national stage

2005: TxSt: 31-44 with chances for closer vs. aTm
2005: SMU: Last 4 wins are TCU, San Jose St, Nevada and Tulsa; 8-66 with chances for even worse vs. aTm

I think you are awesome MR Mustang, but I think you are missing a very important element here. What separates D-I from other divisions is depth and size. What separates the big D-I teams from the lower ones is depth and size. When you have no horribly hot weather depth becomes much less of a factor.

I think we would have hung with them with last night's weather/situation.

Also, remember that A&M is thinking fairly highly of themselves after beating the team that beat the team that beat OU. When depth is taken out of the picture, the little teams can come up big. Texas State is a pretty good team. We need to make sure to play them in the heat of the day next year.
