Re: Matt Davis - starting QB
Jones had one of the best dual threat QBs in SMU history when he came but opted for a dropback true freshman and ran the other off. I just do not see him changing his ways now. If Davis can beat out Burcham in the fall practices then Davis may be the man but I do not see him grasping the Jones way in a month. I do see Davis on the field at another position possibly.

He'll be in a tough situation again this season, when will it be okay to judge him?

Re: Matt Davis - starting QB
June changed the offense pretty significantly going into last season so I don't know that you can say he hasn't ever been flexible.
This is the first year that he has depth at QB. We haven't ever had 5 solid QBs on the roster, there have always been major doubts after the number 2 QB.
I think June really likes having competition at every position on the field. I'm excited that Brown is pushing for a starting spot, even though I hate to see linemen not redshirted. Especially when everyone thinks Barns, Myers, and McCarty are going to be solid players. If he is pushing one of them or a returning starting tackle aside for a starting spot that is a great development.

Compared to what? JasonB's depth are most quality team's leftovers. Most didn't get a decent offer except for Davis and he is a tough fit in June Jones offense. The other had zero BCS offers. Depth generally refers to multiple QBs with quality playing experience. We have 1 guy who has played 2 games both losses. Nobody else has taken a snap. Davis while promising was a 2nd stringer at a JUCO. I think the group is rather unremarkable especially for a Passing Genius. June Jones hasn't exactly proved he can scout, recruit and develop high school QBs and this goes back to Hawaii and Ryan Leaf. The correct football term among football experts for the SMU QB position would be QUESTIONMARK. Let's revisit this quality depth issue after Week 6. I think June's successor might be able to utilize Davis well though-I doubt he sees the field any time soon except maybe in goal line offense

June picked up some changes to the game with Mumme on staff, but his comments seem to suggest he is reverting not innovating.
We do not have 5 solid QBs. We have three viable: Burcham, Davis, and Cassel? Then we have two true freshman (Colbert, Severt), and an upperclassman that has clearly been passed over (Krstich).
Given June's system we probably only have two viable Qbs Burcham and Cassel, and Davis will be a WR.

Re: Matt Davis - starting QB
the only proven solid QBs in the AAC are
John O'Korn UH
P.J. Walker Temple
Shane Carden ECU
not a great sign for the AAC. Quality experienced QBs win Championships. For that reason alone I think its going to be a tough year for a bunch of AAC team. Blair Kiel at Cincy should be interesting. He's got Gilbert's reputation but without the 2 years of playing experience

I agree with the above and hopefully this translates into our secondary getting burned less and us winning some games, secondary is by far and away my biggest concern on this team, outside of QB.

Absolutely zero QBs on the roster are proven, which is why I have us at 5-7 this season. No question about it.
All I am saying is that all 5 of the QBs seem pretty capable, which is a first for us. Everyone heard rumors about Preston, Kaiser, etc when they were the number 2 or 3 QB on the roster. And yes, the misses are June's fault, and some of it is due to injury/illness. But he has always said that he wants 5-6 quality QBs on the roster at all times. We finally seem to have that (although they are young an inexperienced), so it will be interesting to see if he alters behavior.
I think June likes what he sees on the OL, he has has better athleticism at WR, and massive depth at RB. If a QB can't perform with what June sees as upgraded depth and talent on the field, he is going to get swapped out. June has been over protective of his starting QB in order to protect his confidence because there wasn't a lot of options at the position. With more options, I bet there is a higher probability of switching players out earlier.
Re: Matt Davis - starting QB
I think gilbert was a special case, i'm more fearful jj will be rash.
The ncaa is a R.I.C.O.

Most people felt coming in that Colbert and Severt were solid QBs, and the feedback from practice, specifically on Severt, has been very positive. They might be ready yet but they are at least competent

I know that we are all harsh on JJ for the decision to move JW in his first year. But he has incorporated more of a running game with the zone read, and obviously that is tailor made for Davis. He hasn't reverted that out of the offense. But I think he saw the negative impact Mumme's changes had on the overall running game and spacing on the field and backed it out.

Re: Matt Davis - starting QB
Colbert and Severt are progressing, but there is no way they are ready for the starting role, unless June wants to burn a red shirt on one of them on special teams or WR. But, it is good to have this many QBs competing.
Even if it is painful, the game in Waco will be eye opening. 19 days to go! Who knows, given our depth at RB, maybe he will try two backs. Maybe June is feeling the competition for his next pay check. Innovation competition!

Yes, I heard that they are going to use Severt as the gunner on kick-offs and Colbert as the personal protector on punts, what! No one burns QB's redshirts on special teams and there has been no talk about either being a WR.
If you listen to JJ's after practice comments from yesterday the job is NB's for now, although not super pleased with him, Davis is a long way off if he fits our scheme at all (he might be a WR) and Kolney Cassel seems to be playing as well as anyone.

Just seems that by year 7 our QB situation should be in a better state than what it currently is...............

I find it very depressing that i don't have tingles of excitement about our QB going into the season. Clearly NB has not made the progress JJ had hoped and MD is too fresh and too atypical for the system to be a likely candidate for immediate success.

I had hoped that NB would have really matured into the stud he was touted as after getting a couple of games under his belt last year and being the number 1 guy through the spring and summer. Seems camp is off to a shaky start, but some of that could be receivers also making wrong reads...the QB and Receivers have to be absolutely in synch for this O to work.
