Get some offensive lineman

Postby mrydel » Sat Sep 24, 2005 3:35 pm

D Martin is a special runner. Seeing him on the screen has allowed me to witness his talent. We need to get some linemen to block for him.

Yes I know we need everything, including a special teams coach, but this kid could actual turn a team around with the right support.

Why is everyone on the special teams today?

The special teams has scored all 10 of our points today.

the question is whether some of this year's RS Frosh will crack the starting rotation next year. The good news (I suppose) is that nearly the entire OL returns next year. I keep hoping these guys will mature into a competitive unit. They sure got their arses handed to them today.

It's more than just the O line; the list:

--O line too small
--D line too small and slow
--Missed tackles
--Poor punt return coverage (they don't even try)
--Terrible EP/FG unit
--Bad news bears for kick off return
--Terrible offensive play calling--run, run, run, punt...then, with eckert, pass, pass, pass, punt.
--QBs have no sense of urgency
--Neither does the rest of the team
--Receivers can't catch
--Band doesn't know the difference between scoring and getting scored on

Ah, geez, I just don't have the energy to keep listing them...someone else want to continue?

Lets count it up:

1. Fumbled punt
2. Missed extra point (got a do over due to OUR mistake)
3. Muffed kickoff leading to Tulane touchdown
4. Missed blocked punt after getting penetration past the punter
5. One and a half billion yards allowed on Tulane punt returns (probably due to keeping everyone in to block to avoid blocked punts.
6. Kickoff out of bounds

I am sure that I missed others. Henderson, although I think will be a game winner for us, has 3 fumbles on kickoffs this year. He is basically responsible for a score every time he gets the ball. He just needs to make that score be for SMU more often than the opposition.

As a footnote, TAM can put students and walk ons on the field and do a better job of covering kicks than we can. GET A SPECIAL TEAMS COACH!! (and some QUALITY offensive linemen).

Im not saying we dont need a new special teams coach (if we even have one at the moment) but they still scored our only points of the game.

This is just a horrible day overall.

Whereas I agree with most if not all you say, the purpose of my post was not a negative one (we all have plenty to criticize), but rather a comment on Martin. The run he made for about 10 yards near the goal line just before we quit knowing how to play call again was reminiscent of Earl Campbell. He can move laterally with long gliding strides, cut up field quickly and finishes by running over someone. Those that witnessed Campbell in his day should be able to see the similarity. We need to concentrate more on getting this kid the ball and providing him with some holes. This is the type of runner that can attract good lineman to come block for him. But he needs to be seen.

Bennett must go now! Copeland must go now! Quit giving to the Mustang Club until changes are made. The rules must change or we need to drop out of Division 1-A. F. the jerks making decisions at SMU. Long live Billy Joe!

Today's picture of the day says it all. Caleb Peveto looks like a light weight tangling with the Baylor defensive lineman :!:

Gotta disagree on 1 point (maybe 2):
" --Bad news bears for kick off return". Yeah Jessee had a squib kick bounce off his leg for a costly TO. But he did show a "sense of urgency" by taking the next one to the house for a TD. He needs to be in the offense.
