A curious thingI was pretty bummed sitting there with friends and family as time expired. Another game another loss. Just something to be expected. Nothing to get too upset about. Seen it all before.
A curious thing then happened. I met someone. I don't want to reveal his name. He told me without provocation that SMU is going to straighten this out and not to give up. This was not idle talk from someone without any authority. This man is very well connected. He can get things done. So I left feeling that if this guy took the time to tell me this that at least someone up the chain gets it and is finally going to do something about the sorry mess that is SMU football. Tulane was massively bigger than us. They are more talented than us. They should have won the game and they did. They are ranked higher in US News and WR, yet they attract and sign legit d-1 players. We attract and sign marginal d-1 players. No disrespcet to our current players intended but we are physically dominated by almost everyone we play. Size and strenght do matter. We got beat and deserved to get beat. Tulane is the better team. There is absolutely no reason that SMU has to accept this. If we can't recruit the players that Tulane does there is a very serious design flaw in the model. I ask you where the buck stops? Do you really want Jim Copeland chosing another coach to function under the same System? Of course not. I'm not worried about myself. I'm worried about the younger kids who aren't going to put up with this total lack of commitment. They will drift away. They don't want to sit through loss after loss. SMU is at a cross roads. It gets more and more dire with each passing year if not game. We need vision. We need a new AD. We need changes that only that kind of person can bring. The Jim Copelaand era can wimper on out. If SMU isn't willing to do that then I wish President Turner would write us all a letter stating so. We either play by the rules everyone else does or we get out. No more excuses and stupid restrictions.
Re: A curious thing
You are right on. The time has come to make the changes!!! I bet the checks that Turner accepts before the games would be a lot bigger if he and the university would get on board and give the team a chance to win!
Turner's email: [email protected]
Copeland's email: [email protected] A list of the SMU Board of Trustees-no emails listed: http://www.smu.edu/trustees/
it sounds corny, but someone needs to start a campaign to voice one loud opinion. 15 to 20 emails won't get the same attention. make shirts, get students involved, start a site, produce a petition with in depth explanations of what you want changed (besides the obvious w/l), get the media's attention (someone mentions smu just about every week on sportssay.com)..............
Re: A curious thing
It was men against boys out there today. Was that the Tulane Green Wave or the Miami Hurricanes? Are we still in that bad of shape? I'm wondering if we have tougher recruiting restrictions than Harvard at the moment. How can we be playing at such an inferior level of football than Tulane? They have a real football team. On days like today, it feels like there is a complete lack of commitment to compete from the admin, the trustees, and the power alums. Where is the outrage anywhere except this message board? I didnt see any outrage on the part of Gerald Turner today. He kept smiling and shaking hands through it all. He's a better man than I am, because I was ready to explode at anything and anybody. Whoever this mystery person that talked to you Nacho, I hope to God he is right and somebody does something. Today should have sent quite a message. TCU doing it with basket weaving majors is one thing, Tulane smacking you around like that is too much to ignore.
Re: A curious thing
How many rich alums that care about football are left after the death penalty? Weren't most of them banned? I would be surprised if 1% of people who graduated since the death penalty give a damn about SMU football, if they care about SMU at all.
This is the type of game we have all seen before. It rolls around every 4 years like clockwork. It is the game. A true must win. A defining game. SMU loses as always. The fans call for a new coach. The AD is more than happy to start a national search for a new coach. A special blue-ribbon committee is formed. Names are bandied about. The fans get very excited over the possibilities. Then disappointment.
Get ready. The cycle is getting ready to repeat. Definition of insanity: Doing the same thing over and over and over and expecting a different result.
so thats what your mystery man led you to believe? Nothing but a repeat of the same ol thing?
HF that was my take on things.
My "mystery man" is actually someone who I had never met before today. I trust him completely. He is definitely upset by what is happening to the program. I will just say that he is extremely well respected by all SMU fans. I went up to him after the game just to hello. I didn't really say anthing more than that. He then unexpectedly told me, "don't give up. Things are going to change." I'll tell you who it is the next time I see you. I don't want to put his name out because it might compromise whatever he is trying to do. He didn't go into detail. Personally I feel that anything less than replacing the AD is rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
How bout Lance McIlhenny for AD? Banowsky just asked him to be a BCS voter. He must have some respect around administrative circles. I would agree that we need some passion in charge. On second thought I nominate Nacho for AD.
I'm losin my mind. Today killed me. Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg....
If you are nominating me you are losing it.
The great thing about the AD job at SMU is that it can't be done much worse. The bar is not exactly set very high. I'm sure there are many very well qualified people out there who would do a wonderful job at SMU. I'm suprised we have the crowds we do. With some winning our attendance issues would disappear. I hate to rag on a guy about his job but when someone is cleary in over his head he has to go.
judging by the number of Mustang Club members we have, I'd say only about 3-5% of our alumni even care about SMU athletics. I'm beginning to think what little I have to donate each year should supplement what I'm giving to huricane relief funds this year instead of going to this train wreck of an athletic program. Women's soccer is the only team exceeding anyone's expectations so far this year.
