Famous Last Words"This could be the most important win for SMU" - Mike Cavan after beating Kansas, before losing every other game that season.
"I've seen enough" A.D. Copeland said as he fired his head coach later that year. "This is a starting point," Bennett said after beating TCU, SMU's first win over a ranked team since 1986 [type: before losing every game the rest of the year] Have we seen enough yet? This guy obviously can't get his team fired up to play a game. That Tulane game was the most lethargic I've seen by SMU in years. During their 0-12 season, they played with more heart than this. Should we give him the end of the year? Yeah, I seriously think that NEXT year we will have a better team, maybe even go 7-5, or 8-4 (that's IF Phillips or Justin W. secure themself as a legit QB). But won't we lose out on ANOTHER recruiting year. Bring in Todd Dodge. Let him have his 2-3 year honeymoon recruiting every major kid in the area. I seriously hope I am wrong and we win 4-5 of our last 7 games or so...we MIGHT get some recruiting traction then. But, I'm not wrong. We are going to MAYBE beat ECU, Tulsa, and Rice - MAYBE...that means maybe 1 or possibly 2 more wins on this schedule. If we would go 3-8, but our losses were close, I'm still on board. But we already have TWO big blowouts in my opinion. 5-6 is the only record that makes up for 66-8, and 31-10 - and that's without anymore blowouts.
have you been paying attention to what Tulsa and ECU are doing? Don't get your hopes up for those wins. Rice is our best bet...but we've all seen how well SMU defends the option since Bennett arrived on campus.
I believe I said MAYBE twice in that same sentence
Question?? How many HS HCs go directly to a D-1 HC position? I know Houston's Briles was at one time a HS HC, but he did spend some time as an assistant coach at Tech before getting the Houston job.
We have tried an NFL assistant coach, a 1-AA coach, a D-1 DC and now we want to go with a HS HC? What we really need is an experienced, well respected, successful D-1 HC who knows how to win and can recruit Texas. Kind of limits your options real quickly doesn't it. I don't see us going anywhere otherwise. Maybe Bennett can grow into what we need (hell if I know), but I can't help wondering if another change doesn't just put us back yet another 4 years. It's a frustrating situation to say the least.
Guys, Todd Dodge is not leaving SLC until AFTER his son (a Jr.) graduates. YOU WANT THE TRUTH? YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!
It's time for one of SMU's 'deep-pocketed' alums to 'pony up' the $$$ to get a HC in here.
How Gerald Ford can stand to watch (does he even attend the games?) this week-in, week-out in the stadium that bears his name is beyond me. We all know what it's going to take to get results on The Hilltop. $$$$!!!! Big $$$$!!!!! That's what will bring a HC like we need here and return this program to a 'contender' and a 'winner'. There are plenty of SMU alums who have the cash. Hell, I'm not an alum and I'll start the campaign with a $100 check.
Soph, huh? I stand corrected. Dodge would love to get back to U TX. It'll take a few successful stints at other colleges before he earns that. Who knows, he might be interested in an OC job for a couple of seasons. YOU WANT THE TRUTH? YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!
Dodge wouldn't leave for the OC job, I can understand. But, the HC job? C'mon. He'd jump at that opportunity, and he could actually recruit. He's not going to UTex until MACK leaves anyway, and that doesn't look eminent does it? Maybe a 4-5 year stint at SMU would give him time for MACK to leave. Bennett's recruiting honeymoon is long since over, so why wait further. I don't necessarily like HS jumping to College, but this would be our BEST chance at winning over recruits from that 250mile radius - What other experienced (college) coach is out there that would be interested? Do we hire yet another OC or DC (read: inexperienced, no head coaching experience)? There's no College HC that we could get anyway, other than a successful Div-1aa perhaps, but that brings NO RECRUITING CLOUT whatsoever. Period. A HS HC a la Todd Dodge is our only option - and it's a pretty good one.
Perhaps you thought I meant as the OC. I meant as the HC. Does that change your opinion?
Just to answer this one question. Yes, Gerald Ford attends almost all games. He has one of the suites and is there with his family and friends. I see him just about every game. Just send 'da money.
What's the point of bringing in another HC without getting a new AD that will make more headway in gettting the board to make the policy changes and add the tools necessary to create a winning program? The past 16 years have shown that SMU is a coaching graveyard, and it is going to take more than just money to get a quality coach and AD to come here. I don't know if we have the alums and board that are willing to offer what it would take.
The donkey's name is Kiki.
On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney? Good, Bad...I'm the one with the gun.
IMO, the OC job comes with less risk.
It's ONLY your job to turn up the octane on the offense-- not the final score. Ya come in put together some scoring stats, and you're on your way regardless of the W-L record. Take the HC job, go 4-7 a couple of times & you might get a Rep as a Great HS Coach only. Regardless, he's not looking 'til Jan 08... YOU WANT THE TRUTH? YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!
