agreed.. about Copeland needing to leave first. But I'm all for any kind of change.
So tired of these coaches coming here for a first head coaching job after being a coordinator somewhere else. What we obtain too cheap.. we esteem too lightly. It is persistence alone that gives everything its value.
Look guys we're a mid major now and will stay one. We are a stepping stone job (just like TCU). Notice Franchione left TCU the minute Alabama sniffed under his skirts. Urban Meyer left Utah for Florida. These guys all came to their schools as Coordinators (or HC) with lesser programs. The problem is that for each of them there are washouts. The coach at Utah is not doing very well so far. Bennett came with a ton of credentials. So did Cavan. The coach at Baylor came from Kentucky and hasn't done much. His predecessor looked great on paper. George O'Leary was a wonder boy and yet until last weekend, Central Florida was a doormat.
Cavan's credentials were a winning season at Valdosta State (Div-II?) and he was a Georgie QB. Guy Morriss is 3-0 last I checked. Bennett had no HC experience...he had a ton of Assistant work...which begs this question: I guess other programs much has seen something to never hire him as a HC - like TCU did when they hired Fran over Bennett. Central Florida is still a doormat, South Florida beat Louisville. But, that is not Georgie's fault, yet. This is his second season.
I believe Cavan was a 1-AA coach with a successful stint in that position, not a Division II. He might have even had a national championship. That's success but he failed here. Bennett has been in successful programs everywhere he went, but so far he has failed here. Rosseley failed even though he had success everywhere else he has coached. Why do they fail here? Because, of the restrictions put on them by the Administration. I don't care if Pete Carill came here, he'd fail too until the administration allows our program the same ability to be successful that our friends like Tulane, Tulsa, and UTEP have. If they fire Bennett they'd only get someone less qualified that he is, unless changes are made throughout the program.
I look forward to the day some of you realize that the job of SMU football coach is a lot more than hiring a genius x and o coach from one side of the field or another. The job of SMU Football Coach will require one of the greatest sales jobs in NCAA recent history plus quality assistants icluding especially top coordinators.
Agreed. But we also need to get the right guys in the coaching staff. There is a whole list of guys who are great coordinators and horrible head coaches (Norv Turner, Dave Wanstead, for example). Sometimes a VP won't ever become a CEO, and it is for a good reason - it is a different skill set.
The goods can't be sold, we have been bad for so long that nobody will buy them, so no coach worth anything would take this job. This job is a coaching black hole, and the only solution is for some coach, any coach, to make the div-1 rejects we can land into div-1 stars who win games. That is something history has thus far proven impossible. The death knell for SMU football has landed, and we should seriously think of dropping to div-1AA, and concentrating on D-1 hoops, starting with revamping Moody.
I look forward to the day I finally meet you. Seriously.
Cavan served as head coach at Valdosta State from 1986-91; East Tennessee from 1992-96; and SMU from 1997-2001. Cavan has an overall record of 67-49-2, including six seasons at Valdosta State and five seasons at East Tennessee State. Valdosta State - Div II Cavan, who coached from 1986-91 - 37-22-2 record. East Tenn State - DivI-AA Mike Cavan (1992-96) won 30 games over five seasons - whoop. 1992 6th 2-5 5-6 1993 7th 3-5 5-6 1994 T5th 4-4 6-5 1995 5th 4-4 4-7 1996 2nd 7-1 10-3 Boom, let's hire this guy!
A while ago I heard a rumor that Ford hasn't forked over all of his pledge for the stadium (or might haven't even given any money at all). Apparently, he's pissed off with the state of the program (no $ hit). So to avoid embarrasment SMU dipped into the general fund and put up the money to build Ford stadium. SMU is still waiting on Ford's pledge. If this is true it's kind of crappy for Gerald Ford to make a pledge like that even though he's pissed off with the state of SMU football. I hope this rumour is not true.
Sounds like a guy named Ron Meyer. And before you historical revisionists chime in, Meyer was able to put together a team and hire the coordinators to win. Now you can start in that we only got the players because they were being paid BS. There are no Ron Meyers out there wanting to come here. We are what we are, and that ain't good.
I will always wonder what might have happened if Charlie Waters had been hired instead of Bennett. Unless Charlie brought in one of his old Oregon cohorts or NFL buddies, I suspect Schumann would have been retained as DC, the Dallas media would have given SMU more hype than we've had since the death penalty...and I have to believe he would have known enough to hire some guys who were well connected to Texas H.S. football coaches to help in recruiting. After all, he did coach in the college game.
I'd still like to see Bennett succeed. Just saying that given the progress this program has made in his 4 years...makes me wonder how Charlie would have done?
