Should mention, earlier in the day Mouhamed Faye lead Senegal to a come from behind win against Puerto Rico, scoring 20 points and on 7/9 shooting.

I hope there'll be a chance to see Angola vs. Team USA in the knockout stages. Going against the best like DeMarcus Cousins and Anthony Davis could be a real confidence booster if Yanick plays decently.

It could potentially crush him as well if he does terrible, but I'd like to see that match.

“@JonRothstein: Interesting note from FIBA World Championships - SMU's Yanick Moreira has averaged 9 PPG + 6 RPG in 14 MPG in Angola's first two games.”

The winner of group C (USA) will play the 4th place team from group D in the first round of the knockout stage, next saturday. Angola will be the underdog to Slovenia and AusTralia, so they need to beat Mexico tomorrow to get that 4th spot in the knockout round.

Earlier today Senegal secured a spot in the knockout round by pulling off a big upset over Croatia. Mohamed Faye had 11 points and 5 rebounds. Gorgui Dieng (Timberwolves) led Senegal with 27 points and 8 boards.

Yannick played pretty well, but the rest of the Angola squad was ice cold, and they were crushed by Mexico 79-58, That makes their chances of advancing past the group stage very slim. Yannick played 20 minutes and finished with 9 rebounds and 13 points on 6/13 shooting. As a team though, Angola was just 21/78 from the floor (27%).

Tomorrow Angola will play Slovenia, the first place team in their group, Slovenia is led by brothers Goran and Zoran Dragic. Goran plays for the Phoenix Suns, and Zoran is recieving free agent offers after playing for the Rockets summer league team this year. Slovenia is considered a contender for the Bronze medal, behind the US, and Spain.

It sounds like Yanick needs to be playing a lot more. He seems to be pretty productive when he is in

Until he got hurt during X-mas break, he was playing ~20 min/gm.

I really think (read: hope), LB felt that he was not 100% and could not afford to play a 60% YM during conference play when he had CC/Ben

Well, yes and no. You should note that both games where he put up big stats came against teams with small frontcourts, and were blowouts, one a win, and one a loss. When he got 5 minutes of playing time in a close game (lithuania) he played poorly, and Angola lost their lead, never to get it back. Angola built a big early lead against Korea, and when Yanick got in he played well, so he got to stay in while the starters rested. Against Mexico, half his numbers came in the 4th quarter, when the game was out of reach, and Mexico had pulled most of their starters (although Gustavo Ayon stayed in until the end). Sometimes he has done well, but he has played alot in situations were the game was no longer close.

I think Angola should play him more now, in the interest of developing a promising young player. Several of their older players are close to retirement, and Yannick could play a big role for them down the road. Now that they are all but eliminated from advancing to the next stage, it may be time to use these games to give younger guys more experience.

Just ended. Angola lost, but played well vs undefeated Slovenia. Yanick ended up w/maybe 18-20pts. Scored in a variety of ways etc. Missed a few duckies late, but overall looked like a very high end big. Future of Angola hoops, possibly the present as well. He's gonna average double digits for the championships

20 points, 5 rebounds and 1 block for Yanick, his best game against a good team.

Games are on ESPN3. Angola plays Australia tomorrow, and that should be their last game. Aussies beat Mexico this morning, if Angola beats Australia, they could still advance if Mexico loses to Korea.
