Mike Cavan.
Now there was a coach that knew how to bring home at least a nearly .500 season. I know a lot of people wanted him out, but I guess it proves to be careful what you wish for.

Bring back Mike Cavan! You know who I miss?
Mike Cavan. Now there was a coach that knew how to bring home at least a nearly .500 season. I know a lot of people wanted him out, but I guess it proves to be careful what you wish for. ![]()
HE!! No Not Cavan - Maybe RossleyAt least we had an offense under Rossley. And we had some pretty competitive games. Especially against aTm. I hated it when Cavan was hired and didn't take advantage of the talent he had that Rossley had recruited. Dante Womack didn't even play in his final game as a Mustang against a winless TCU team, and we lost. Ramon Flannigan saw little playing time in that game. What a dunce Cavan was. We could have been 8-3 that year with those players, instead we went 6-5. And it was down hill every year after that.
Re: HE!! No Not Cavan - Maybe Rossley
Yeah Cavan is such a great coaching talent, thats probably why so many teams at every level have tried to hire him!
C-ya @ Milos!
Keep the faith, raplh. And whether you meant that tongue-in-cheek or not, you're right. The overall talent is better, and we're bigger and stronger and faster at just about every position than we were last year and the year before and the year before .... Hang in there PonyFans. We need to support this team more than ever. When you see the players, ENCOURAGE THEM. We can't quit on them if we're asking them not to quit. Give 'em hell in Huntington, Ponies!
Re: HE!! No Not Cavan - Maybe Rossley
Not to mention Caven running off players that had success at other schools like Jack Brewer, Koron Riley, Jimmy Smith, Chis Sanders, Josh McCown, and Hernandez (the kicker) who quit b/c Caven would not allow him to make travel arrangments dur to soccer. Caven is a idiot. Rossley was a great coach that did what he could with the talent he had.
Were you at the game last weekend? Our "bigger and stronger and faster" players got their a$$e$ handed to them in every aspect of the game! This team looked did not even look as good as the 1989 team did. There is no doubt that we support the team, but it is looking more and more like it is another pitiful season just like the majority of the last 16 years have been.
Rossley had two 5-6 seasons in 6 seasons as head coach with less talent facing better competition than Bennett. That second 5-6 could've easily been 8-3. Would've had 3 5+ win seasons in 7 years if Copeland hadn't fired him for Cavan. We probably wouldn't have lost to TCU making the 97 season 7-4. Not exactly world beaters, but gradually climbing upwards. SMU needs a big can of Copeland Be Gone!
gramatically incorrect statement again. Rossley had one 5-6 season against dramatically better competition ONLY because he had about 38 seniors most of which were 4 year letterman-the most experienced team in modern day college football history. His other 5-6 team was with SWC conference recruited players playing against the WAC-Rossley was the one with the advantage that year. In between he won about 4 games in 3 years and even won only one game in his FIFTH season with all his own players. He was a miserable failure at recruiting and coaching. Couldn't beat Rice in 6 tries. Pathetic.
Not pathetic, and better than Cavan, or Bennett. Rossley tied top 10 A&M 21 - 21 during one of his 1 win seasons, and was robbed of a victory against them the next year at Kyle Field. Cavan had trouble against the WAC Lite, but at least he knocked off Rice.

And Bennett beat #23 TCU who beat Oklahoma, Utah and BYU so far. That and $7 will get you two lattes. Rossley didn't set the world on fire here. 5 wins is still a losing season by my calculations. Cavan didn't. Gregg didn't. Bennett hasn't. Each had success before they got here. What went wrong? Former SMU coaching retreads are not the answer. They wouldn't come back anyway, because their careers suffered here. As I said earlier, let's figure out why we aren't succeeding now and then we can fire who needs to be fired, hire who needs to be hired, and be successful. Otherwise, we're just changing deck chairs on the Titanic.
