Our next AD: Nominations?

Postby MrMustang1965 » Sun Sep 25, 2005 10:54 pm

We're all in agreement that SMU needs a new AD. But I can't remember reading any posts on who it could be.

How about some nominations and the reasons you believe they'd make a good AD.

The floor is open to nominations.

No offense meant 65...but this is like [deleted] in the wind. First there isn't an opening and second what we think and two bucks and a quarter will get you a cup of coffee...maybe.

Don't be so sure. I'm not sure where I stand on this. I like Copeland, and I like Bennett, but obviously something needs to improve. At the game yesterday, I heard someone talking about "cleaning house" and a couple of guys in front of me turned around to inform me that Copeland is not the problem.
Personally, I don't know him well enough to have an opinion (we've shaken hands once). But I don't think your sentiment is as universal as you might believe.

Hmmmmm.....Charlie Waters HAS ZERO CONNECTION TO SMU.

I think Charlie Waters would be a stupid hire. I think any SMU alum would be a stupid hire. I can't think of any SMU alum, other than maybe Lamar Hunt (which is so stupid it isn't worth bringing up), I would trust to run the SMU athletic department.

What do you think some SMU alum is going to do? What do you think think Charlie Waters is going to do? The only thing they can maybe do is get SMU in the paper a little more than it is now. And I don't know if you figured this out, but the firing and hiring of the AD is going to get SMU on page 1 of the sports section of the DMN anyway. This is stupid.

Marketing is a problem, but it isn't the problem. The problems are (i) we can't raise any money; and (ii) the damn place is run like the Mickey Mouse club. We NEED, we ABSOLUTELY NEED, someone who knows how to run a successful athletic program. We NEED, we ABSOLUTELY NEED, someone who knows how to raise a little money. We NEED, we ABSOLUTELY NEED, someone who knows how to hire a coach.

The absolute best thing in the world SMU can do is take its time and find the right guy that knows how an athletic department should be run and can demand and make the changes that need to be made. And chances are that guy is a guy that very few if anyone on this board has heard of.

I am sure there were morons at TCU in 1996 trying to make the case for Jim Wacker for AD, but TCU went and hired the AD away from Miami (Ohio). That was probably a better choice.

Unless there is some SMU alum I don't know of currently serving as AD somewhere, I have zero interest in an SMU alum and in fact will be a little PO'd if an SMU alum is hired.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

First, Copeland has plusses and minuses and I don't think he's gone by any stretch of the imagination. However, if he were to no longer be in the position, it would be hard to find someone of his stature to take his place. Charlie Waters has no experience running an athletic program of 17 sports, dealing with scheduling, contracts, budgets, etc. Give me a break. I would probably look for an assistant AD from a Big Ten, Big XII or SEC school. I would not go to the ACC or to the PAC 10 because you would end up with another guy exactly like Copeland.

I believe his wife Rosie was a SMU cheerleader.

Maybe we can hire away an AD from a big school like Virginia?! Oh wait we already did that. Maybe the AD from Florida or Michigan will quit and come to SMU??!!

The 2 time National Champion USC Trojans AD is an ex-baller with a name a zippo experience.

Charlie knows a little about sports. He watched Tex Schramm, Gil Brandt and Tom Landry for years and was a coordinator for the Oregon Ducks.
Its not like he is Nate Newton.

I just don't want Copeland either making the decision on Bennett or Bennett's replacement. Talk about lack of passion...it is there in spades! Right at the top!

At least if we hired Nate Newton we might have a chance to sign his son.

What we don’t need is a corporate yes-man such as Copeland or an idealist such as Pye.

What we do need is a strong-willed, articulate leader who can convince our Board of the necessary changes that need to be implemented to our Model and who has the experience to actually do it. Show our alumni we are once again serious about winning and the donations start flowing. More money means better marketing. Changes to our model means we start winning again. Doubtful the new AD would want to keep PB, can’t say I blame him.

Ideally this candidate comes from a strong academic program; I prefer one from the Big X. This provides him more cover with our Board, making it easier for them to accept changes.

One final criteria…must have high integrity.

Why the fascination with Charlie Waters for AD? What about other ex-Cowboys like Don Smerek, Beasley Reece, Bruce Huther, or Mike Hegman?

AD isn't an ex-player position. It's a CEO position.
