Oct. 28, 1989: SMU 35, North Texas 9.

74 freshmen. 74 FRESHMEN.

This was ONE week after Houston beat us 95-21.

Attendance: 21,186

Yesterday's attendance: 22,398.

Forrest Gregg could coach 'em up better TODAY.

SMU definitely had a tough schedule in 89, so don't think I'm knocking the players from back then. I just feel the players we have now aren't as bad as the original poster is making them out to be.

Anyone recall the SMU player that uppercut the Longhorn player in the family jewels? he did it as the guy was standing over him, I believe he was taunting SMU player. It was legendary, but now the name escapes me.

We had Ownby packed every game, there was a buzz of excitement even though we knew we were in trouble. # 16 Houston had smaller crowds than us.

I loved that team.

First I've ever heard, but then again I was 1-2 when it happened. Please let this be true.

I definitely remember that play. The huge Texas lineman was pushing our guy back down the field AFTER the whistle had blown on the play. Our guy hauled off and gave the Horn the uppercut and he hit the ground like a sack of potatos. Our guy was ejected. Gregg later said that went on in the pros but you didn't do it with 20,000 people staring at you. He was not critical of the SMU player at all.

The longhorn lineman kept driving him after the whistle blew. It was a great moment for SMU. That team was not good but they were not going to take krapp from anyone.

Because I has to take the LSAT that day, I was late arriving to that game. Much to my surprise, we were still hanging in the game at halftime. They played hard and I was never ashamed of how they played.

Btw - it is important to remember that 30 of our 45(ish) total scholarship players were true freshman.

The 1989 team played better than this 2014 team but with less talent and fewer scholarship players. Go figure.

I do remember the inept teams under Caven and Bennett. We had omelet seasons of those messes. So far, just two blow outs this year. I have to go with Caven/Bennett teams for now and wait to see if this team does anything.
