SMU will not get a true "hot" prospect-if there are 10 jobs open next year we will be tenth in line for "hot" prospects-we are going to have to dig a little deeper.

LSU, TCU and Kansas off the Top of my head-there were others. The guy was a perrenial also-ran for many jobs-which I pointed out before he was hired on this board.

[quote="FWMustang"]Gibbs led to Schnellenberger and Blake. NO thank you. Word was that Gibbs didn't believe in conditioning.

I can vouch for the statement about Gibbs & conditioning. Off-season conditioning consisted of 10X100s and 8X80s, three times a week. Can't remember the rest time in between.

Stallion, what about Mark Stoops?

Would he come?

Would we want him?

Image

Arizona took a page from Oklahoma when Mark Stoops became brother Mike’s first assistant in December, coming from Miami to be the Wildcats’ defensive coordinator and secondary coach – the same slot his brother had filled under Bob Stoops for the Sooners.

It gives UA two regarded experts in secondary play and should help transform one of the Cats’ sore points in the past few years.

Stoops, 37, was defensive backs coach for the Miami Hurricanes the past three seasons. He also has experience as a co-defensive coordinator at Houston in 2000, three years coaching defensive backs at Wyoming from 1997-99, one year in the same capacity at South Florida in 1996, and five years in the Ohio prep ranks.

• The 2003 Miami defense finished first in Division I-A in pass defense, second in total defense, fourth in scoring defense and fourth in pass efficiency defense.

• Junior safety Sean Taylor, the nation’s leader with 10 interceptions in 12 games, spearheaded a unit that had 21 total to rate sixth nationally.

• The 2003 ‘Canes rated 14th nationally with 31 turnovers gained.

• Miami won four consecutive Big East championships with Stoops on staff and finished 11-2 with a victory over Florida State in the Orange Bowl, for a final No. 5 ranking in the polls in 2003.

• Miami safety Sean Taylor was one of four Hurricane defenders taken in the first round of the 2004 NFL draft, along with linebackers Jonathan Vilma and D.J. Williams, and tackle Vince Wilfork. Cornerback Alfonso Marshall was drafted in the seventh round.

• Stoops’ 2002 Miami secondary led NCAA Division I-A in passing defense, allowing only 119.7 yards per game, and led the nation in pass efficiency defense with a sparkling 83.91 rating after four new starters replaced the top-five players from the previous season.

• The 2002 UM secondary tied an NCAA record by allowing only 9.5 yards per completion.

• Stoops’ 2001 secondary spearheaded a defense that helped the Hurricanes win their fifth national championship. Miami led the nation in scoring defense, pass efficiency defense and turnover margin.

• The 2001 Hurricanes set a school record with 27 interceptions for a unit with 45 takeaways.

• Phillip Buchanon, Edward Reed and cornerback Mike Rumph – members of the 2001 unit – were first-round NFL draft picks in April 2002, and safety James Lewis was selected in the sixth round. Markese Fitzgerald also played in the NFL as a free agent. The 2002 draft marked the only time in NFL history that three defensive backs from the same school were drafted in the opening round.

• Stoops coached consensus All-Americans in Miami safety Edward Reed (2001) and Wyoming free safety Brian Lee (1997), and Miami cornerback Phillip Buchanon (2001) was named an All-American by ABC Sports as a punt returner.

• His 1998 Wyoming secondary helped the Cowboys’ defense rate 28th nationally in scoring defense. One of his charges, Trent Gamble, signed an NFL free agent deal in 2000 and played four years in the league.

• Stoops’ 1997 Wyoming secondary is considered one of the best in school history, ranking sixth nationally in pass defense and intercepting a school-record 24 passes.

• From 1992 to 1996, he was athletics director and coached defensive backs at Nordonia Hills High School in Macedonia, Ohio.

• Stoops played on four Iowa teams that played in bowl games, and he attended bowl games while his brother, Mike, was a graduate or volunteer assistant on Hayden Fry’s staff – the 1986 Rose, 1986 Holiday, 1987 Holiday and 1988 Peach Bowls.

If the timing had been right, I'll bet we could have gotten Mike Price. We have more to offer than UTEP.

Your conduct during that time was embarassing. You liked to point out that Bennett had been "fired five" times as a coach. Yet when Dooby pointed out that Charlie Waters had been "fired" by Oregon, you didn't say a word.

At least he was asked to interview.

I didn't know that reasonable criteria for a head coach are (i) has never been fired from any job at any time regardless of the circumstances; and (ii) never interviewed for a job and been turned down. I can't begin to tell you how stupid that sounds.

7-32 I guess I was a hell of a lot smarter than the rest of you. Oh and it would be nice if you got your facts straight-Waters coached Oregon as defensive coordinator and then quit when his teenage son was tragically killed in an accident-that's why Waters took a leave of absense to be close to his family.

Fellas...remember we are on the same team. We can all agree on these three things (1) SMU football is an absolute joke and embarressment, (2) it is going to take a lot of money (and I mean a lot) to lure a credible, proven coach to SMU (something SMU has not had since the DP), and (3) Bennett is getting his rear waxed in recruiting this year which does not bode well for the future.

That's right, he was fired by the Broncos. I forgot. No doubt, with Charlie Waters, we would have gone 32-7 in that span.

You are lucky we can't search your posts on mustangmaniacs and the older posts on this board. As you said about a million times, we can't judge a coach that has to recruit under this model. Yet, you have no problem judging Rossley and Bennett. Where on the search committee for Cavan or something?

I hope with the next hire they just let you pick. Make sure the guy has never left a job for any reason and never interviewed for a job he didn't get.

Charlie Waters last game as a Dallas Cowboy was years before any recruit was born. And while I never thought of him as a great player, but more of a competent one, I seriously doubt that todays recruit would get all wet about having Charlie Waters visit him. Should he be considered for a vacancy if he applies, absolutely. But so should other potential names, R.C. Slocum, Stoops, and Beamer's VT defensive coordinator. I am sure there are current (1-AA) and former (1-A and NFL) head coaches who should get a look. But until we figure out why with four different coaches with different backgrounds and qualifications and lots of prior success, we have the same results over a sixteen year period, we are not going to get any better and might as well not make any changes. Gregg took Cincinnati to a Super Bowl. Cavan won a 1-AA championship. Rossley was a successful offensive coordinator. Bennett was a successful defensive coordinator.

Here's a guy with SMU connections who should be able to figure out how to get the job done.

Recruiting restrictions

Postby Nacho » Fri Sep 30, 2005 12:24 pm

I know that we have restrictions regarding juco transfers and transfers in general. Can someone outline those?

Are we on a level playing field regarding hs players. Can we take minimal qualifiers? I don't want to take partial or certainly non-qualifiers. I do want to take athletes that qualify out of hs for practically any other school in the country. Do we do this?

Is there something else I am missing re recruiting restrictions?

And while you're calling out others for their lack of factual knowledge, you might want to check your work, too. Charlie Waters' son did not die in an accident. He died in his sleep, and the cause never has been determined.

Phil Bennett aint the problem. Let's not run him off in our frustration to fix this thing.

I'm surprised, Stallion, to see you not hammering this point since you've stated so many times over the last few years that it's the MODEL not whoever happens to be wearing the whistle.
