Thanks for sharing that... that was fantastic! Clearly there is more to success than being able to laugh at yourself, however, I find it a sign of the type of self confidence that I look for in high pressure situations. YMMV.

SMU is the worst job to have in America. What June did was a miracle. No coach will ever win there consistently ever till President Turner leaves. Soooo many things June wanted but was denied, that's why the program hit it's peak with 4 straight bowl games. Hey, you have to go compete with Baylor, Texas A&M, TCU and Texas Tech and to help you we are goin to build a state of the art tennis stadium. No indoor facilities or proper administration back. COACH BEWARE is the official SMU slogan

Will be interesting to see who the search committee comes up. There will be a lot of names on this list for sure. Pays well, gold mine of talent on our front porch, but I think several requirements are important and will weed out a lot of "Big Names".

Texas Ties
Has to be able to recruit
Proven track record of turning around programs
Familiarity with recruiting the DFW metroplex
Established connections with Texas HS coach
Fundraising
Finding and Developing Talent (Not playing with the best recruits)

With that said, I think there are a two ways we go about this. We go and find the program rebuilders, that have the ability to turn around programs / build them, or hire the up and coming coordinator who has energy (can breathe life into the program again )and can recruit. I think Tom Herman is a good fit because of Texas Ties and recruiting / familiarity with DFW, I know from people in the profession that he was interested in the job last year when the "Contract Conspiracy" happened with June at the end of the season. The opposite of that, two guys down the road that would be great hires would be Dennis Franchione or Larry Coker. Coker had success with another coaches players at UM but is building a machine at UTSA with limited resources and are competing in the CUSA already after only being a program for 3 years. Franchione, throughout his career has been proven over and over again to rebuild programs, at New Mexico he took them to there first bowl game in 30+ years and one the WAC title, he built the foundation for what TCU is now, took them to there first bowl game in 40 years, and a top 25 finish, took Alabama from being 3-8 the year before two 7-5 the next and winning the SEC West the next year. I'll give you that A&M he was average, but he recruited great talent in Martellus Bennett, Stephen Magee, Javorski Lane, Mike Goodson, and Ryan Tannehill and that was when the big 12 was winning national championships. Now he's transitioned Texas State from a mediocre FCS team into the FBS and was the fastest transitional team to be bowl eligible other than marshall in the history of CFB. Can't argue with his ability. We should've hired him in 2007 the first time. He's 62 , has a lot left in the tank and would turn around the program in under 5 years, just in time to hand it off to a developed OC / DC (Ex. the TCU effect) .

The student asking the questions could be a little more polished; however, Chad's answers are great. A few interesting tidbits:

Does Morris miss anything about Texas? Yes - Mexican food. His family loves Tex-Mex. (Note to Rick Hart: if he interviews, take him out to El Fenix/Mia's/Javier's/any other good Mexican/Tex-Mex - show him what he's been missing!)

Was a math major/Statistics minor at A & M - considered the actuarial field before settling on high school teaching/ coaching. (Interesting comments about how he uses this in coaching/analyzing the game.)

East Texas roots - Chad's and his wife's families still live only 12 miles apart back in Texas. (In addition of course to the Tex-Mex, another positive of coming back to coach in Texas.)

Overall takeaway: Chad seems like a genuine good guy and appears to have real personality; I could see him sitting in a recruit's home in deep East Texas just as naturally as in Dallas or anywhere else. From all that I've seen/read (including of course his tremendous success/rise in the coaching ranks), we would be very lucky to have him.

I think the Cowboys would pursue Sumlin before Briles.

Interesting, and I agree. Sumlin just seems more NFL than Briles does. Briles is a good coach, apparently, but he just seems very "small town." He's the king of Wack-o. Why would he want to leave to put up with Jerry's crap?

Yes, Turner said in the presser that SMU will do whatever it takes to be competitive with P5 schools and our peers. We will pay for a coach and we will do our best to raise funds and improve facilities to P5 level. This whole have and have not deal has changed SMU admin and they know the train is about to leave the station for good so all efforts will be done to get us in.
