SMU's Chase gives Wake up CallThis guy is nails. SMU needs a team of Bobby Chases.

He's a good player, but this quote makes me wonder if his grip on reality is functional:
"We have to get together. We have the talent to be a powerhouse on offense. I truly believe that. We have a lot of talent on offense, but we've just got to get some chemistry going on the field. That's how I feel." I know, I know, he has to say that in an interview...at least he showed some sack by stepping up and taking the blame.
This team needs a 'player/team leader'...has anyone really stepped into that role yet? My nomination: Chase!
Good to see that there is at least one strong voice in the locker room. I began to wonder after the second half in the last two games. I hope they can light a fire under these guys. They need to show up and play [deleted] Sat.
That's evident every day when he runs those post-practice sessions. Those should be almost mandatory. Bobby Chase is a complete perfectionist.
here's the article. nothing damaging at all and just repeating what PB already saying.
------------- SMU's Chase gives wake up call Chuck Landon Daily Mail sportswriter Thursday September 29, 2005 HUNTINGTON -- Bobby Chase isn't just a go-to guy. He's a stand-up guy, too. SMU's leading receiver proved that by his reaction to a controversial story, which appeared in Monday editions of the Dallas Morning News. The story detailed both the recent and not so recent woes of the SMU football program, pointing out that the Mustangs have been outscored, 97-18, in two consecutive losses and that Coach Phil Bennett has a record of 7-32. The story began, "SMU Athletic Director Jim Copeland expressed concern that several players noted a lack of competitiveness on the football field following Saturday's loss to Tulane." The article also noted that Bennett had a closed door meeting with his assistant coaches after SMU's 31-10 loss, asking his staff for solutions. "We've played a lot harder than that last year," Bennett was quoted by the Dallas newspaper. "I'm not an excuse maker. We just didn't finish plays. We appear to be a step slow in everything. I don't know why. The accountability factor and playing with a passion has to happen." Bennett signed a two-year contract extension last December, carrying through 2008. He has a base salary of $450,000. The story also said that during a recent meeting, athletic board members expressed frustration about the direction of the football program. "I'm going to coach as hard as I can," Bennett told the newspaper. "I believe in these kids and I'm not going to let anything distract us. That's the last time I will speak (about my job status)." After the story was read to Chase during a telephone interview, the star wide receiver showed his character is just as good as his hands. Chase refused to shoot the messenger or dodge the issue. "Well, I really don't disagree with it," he said of the newspaper story. "We went out there Saturday and we just couldn't get anything going at all. The defense, I feel, is on the field too much. I think the defense gets worn out. "The offense needs to be on the field longer, so the defense can rest. "The defense is going to make plays. They are consistently getting turnovers and making big things happen these last four games. "I watched film Sunday (of the offense) and it was only like 15 minutes long because the offense was barely on the field. It just kept going three-and-out, three-and-out. Then, there were turnovers on special teams." Then, Chase struggled to find just the right words to express his emotions. "I just don't think we're finishing on the field," he said. "And I just don't think -- and this is including me as well -- we're ... we're not ... I don't know ... we went out there and just ... I do agree with what they're saying in the newspaper." Chase believes the offense is to blame and needs to step up when SMU (1-3 overall, 0-1 Conference USA) plays its CSTV telecast game against Marshall (1-2, 0-1) at 4 p.m. Saturday at Edwards Stadium. "Yeah, I mean, our highest scoring game was 21 points against TCU," said Chase, referring to SMU's lone win. "We only scored 10 points last week. And the touchdown was on a kickoff return. So, the offense only scored three points. "We have to get together. We have the talent to be a powerhouse on offense. I truly believe that. We have a lot of talent on offense, but we've just got to get some chemistry going on the field. That's how I feel." SMU's offense seems to blow hot and cold. After scoring 23 points in a loss to Baylor and 21 in the TCU win, the Mustangs have been limited to only 8 and 10 points in their last two games. "It does appear to be hot and cold, hot and cold," admitted the 6-foot-4, 205-pound Chase, who has 11 catches for 161 yards and two touchdowns. "But I just think if we were focused and we were ready to rock roll and if our offense came out with that mentality every game, I feel like we would have much better results every game on offense. "I just don't think we've been having the same focus and mentality as we had in the TCU game." Perhaps, a story like the one in the Dallas Morning News can serve as a rallying point. Could this story pull the Mustangs together? "The story is kind of true," said Chase. "But I think we had a good practice today (Tuesday). So, I guess we'll take it step by step. I think that story probably is a wake-up call. "I hope that's what it is for this week."
Chase speaks the truth. I hope he is not starting due to missing a curfew or having a Kappa in his room after hours. That would make more sense. Of course, getting a Kappa to your room on a late night rendevous should elevate your playing status.
I love the line about watching the offense on film and it only took 15 minutes. They must have stopped for popcorn half way through it to make it last that long.
YOU WANT THE TRUTH? YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!
