Re: Houston Nutt
Nutt signed 41 players one year and most didn't even make it into school. He has no background near Larry Brown. It is an insult to mention Larry Barry and Nutt in the same breath.

Look, I am not pushing for Nutt. I have been knowledgeable about him since he was in high school so I think I know a little about him. He is sleazy and you kind of want to wash your hands after meeting him. But he can recruit and he can coach. I posted within 10 minutes of June quitting that I was certain Nutt's resume was on Hart's desk and I will still say that is true. He wants work and he loves Dallas. He lives in Dallas. He will be in the mix. I would not be upset if he were hired, but I do not think we will go that route. It would be out of step for SMU.

Wow. Getting testy aren't we. The statement was made that we should only hire an active coach. I said then that would have left Brown out of the picture. Nothing to do with background, ability, hair gel, or underwear. Just active or not. No insult intended. And by the way, some of Brown's players are having some academic struggles and I do not hold that against him in any way.

Me personally, I think of Nutt as sleazy. I think of Petrino as an [deleted]. Nutt has a very bubbly personality. Petrino from what I understand is very difficult to get along with.

Re: Houston Nutt
Nutt has recruiting advantages. He also motivates (several wins against significant opponents including beating eventual NCAA Champion LSU on the Baton Rouge campus).
I'm not saying this guy is the guy for us, but I sure wouldn't exclude him this early in the search. He connects with kids, wins and motivates.
Oh, And I am not a Houston Nutt fan. But I can't eliminate a guy this early because I may not like, if, he has a proven wining record.

Don't suppose Ole Miss would trade us their current head coach for a player or two to be named later, you suppose? He at least is working to get the talent there, now the question is can he coach them up?
No deal.
That said, I think Chris Kiffin should get a hard look for defensive coordinator if we hire an offensive minded guy.
Chris is a phenomenal recruiter (he's the guy that pulled #1 OT Laremy Tunsil out from under Georgia and Florida State a year ago... how? He became Tunsil's girlfriend's best friend) and a very good young defensive line coach. He's also learned defense from both Ed Orgeron and his father. In my opinion, he's one of the currently unrecognized rising stars in college coaching. He's also not the slimeball his brother is.

Yep, pretty much a rah rah guy with very little substance. What was his record at Ole Miss his last 2 years? Was he on an upward trend or a downward trend?

Perhaps the best argument against Nutt thus far presented. OldMiss sucks in perpetuity much like SMU. He took over a suck [deleted] program and didn't turn it around in a mere two years. He took over a suck [deleted] Arkyland program and went on to western division championships.
So obviously if we hired him, he would suck like he did at a perpetuity suck program like SMU, I mean Old Miss, and not perform like he did at Arkyland.
I like the way you think!

If you knew anything about what happen you will known that Coach O loaded that team up with talent and all that talent was either redshirts or transfers that became eligible the year Nutt can in to coach. He had a good first year with Coach O's and after things started going down. Did not really develop Jevan Snead and his conservative play calling was atrocious. He got fired for a reason.

This amuses me... According to the AP rankings, Ole Miss is the #23 program in the country all time. Pretty crappy by SMU standards, I guess.

By what standard? When there were only 30 college football teams in America?

Not hearing anyone pound the table for him as our first choice. But maybe he's a third or fourth choice.... In any event, I'm optimistic that we will have several quality candidates to choose from in our price range.
