SMU'er if you listened to the replay he did not say "mess". Even though I know what you are saying.
Maybe he said "you don't want to get involved with all that" or something similar instead of "mess", but the idea was that SMU wasn't a good environment for a blue chip player to even consider. IMO it was unnecessary for answering the question and below the belt. I'm embarrassed that he'd think that privately and say that to his nephew, even though it may be true, but it ticks me off that he'd intimate that to a national audience. It's doubly kicking a dying dog.
A lot of recent ex-Mustangs don't share ED's opinion and are pretty pissed off about it. Coaches come and go, but we are Mustangs for life. I wear my ring everyday and to hear someone who played in the glory days talk about SMU like this really pisses us off. I met ED after the Pitt game. Wishing I hadn't.

Dickerson is totally out of line. Since he helped lure JJ to SMU (and was praised extensively for it), this may be his ego talking. JJ was done with us after the ASU debacle exposed his true motives. Dickerson's negativity needs to be simply ignored. 4 bowl games in 6 years is JJ's legacy, and it is a good one. We now build on that, bring in a coach who can and will recruit Texas and focus on an AAC title. We'll see what ED has to say in 3 years.
