Norm on SMU/JJ
Norm, just did a segment on SMU and Coach Jones. Similar to ESPN article, brought us back from oblivion, but didn't have that signature turn around season. Norm was very complimentary of SMU generally and thinks we can at least be the best of the "have-nots" with the right coach. I want back in with the "haves".

He also said SMU is locked out of the P5. The door is slammed shut. Done deal.

Ha Ha @ done deal.
Deals change with reality....
if ....i know a very big "if"
but if we ever became the best of the have-nots with a full stadium
I assure you the door would not be slammed shut
Dallas combined with being the best of have-nots, full stadium,
with great national power basketball team....that door would open.

Stupid. A door that is slammed shut is the same as one that is closed....it makes a loud noise but it can still be re-opened.

As long as money talks, people will always listen.
A strong SMU in Dallas with a great football and basketball program will speak louder than most. The corporate sponsorships and viewership would drive the program to great heights. Miami Model.

for example - anyone else notice our new website design - there are a TON of new corporate sponsors on that sucker - looks like we are getting it done finally in that world - will be great to see that grow - has been dead basically for 20 years. There are noting but corporate sponsors for SMU in every direction in Dallas.

I agree we have a lot potential but there are other good schools competing for spots that many not even exist - Tulane (basketball will be greatly improved this season, new football stadium, New Orleans), Temple (strong basketball, improving football, Philly), San Diego St (strong basketball, decent football, large enrollment, San Diego), UCF (TCU like success recently in football, questions in basketball, new football stadium, HUGE enrollment, Orlando), UNLV (respectable football, quickly improving hoops, Vegas), Houston (respectable football and hoops, new football stadium, large enrollment, Houston).

Unfortunately, I think he is absolutely right. The train left the station and we were not ready to get on board. With the new NCAA rule changes for the P5, our door has been slammed shut. The real question for the school and program is philosophically what direction do we take now. This should be the question the rest of the FSD programs should also be asking. We have been relegated to D 2 status so what next? Fight a losing battle for the next 10 years as Don Quixote unrealistically thinking there is a chance to get a P5 bid when they will not be allowed to play you after the next 4 years and no way to prove your program; bite the realistic bullet and start transforming your program and expectations?????? The P5 will be forced to stay greedy and $$$$ driven thereby leaving little chance for inclusion and splitting the pot. The big guys took all the candy so now what do you do when the door is locked?
Re: Norm on SMU/JJ
I agree that ship has sailed, but the way you deal with it, is to become unmissable. Perhaps at some point the P5 schools will adopt a Premier League approach. If you are on the bottom long enough, you get shipped out for the best team in the lower division. Also, using hoops to grow our program (which was Pye's idea by the way) may work in a major metro area. After all, if SMU, UConn and Memphis can kick their way into the final four each year, suddenly, we are taking money out of P5 mouths. And how do P5 conferences regain those $$$$, they invite them into the tent. After all, historically, Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, UNC and Syracuse really have no reason to exist in a P5 conference if judged on their football programs.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

Why would P5 schools ever vote to potentially downgrade their own programs? That makes no sense and it will not happen.

Re: Norm on SMU/JJ
P5 conferences only care about money. Show them they can fill their pockets with SMU in their conference and we are in. Simple math guys, it's an offer they can't refuse.
