New coach will probably want a staff full of his guys, but Mason is a great guy and a capable coach and recruiter. And a good fit at SMU. He won't have any problem getting a new DC job, and if he does well holding the Ponies together this year, maybe a FCS head job somewhere if he wants it. If we are throwing out the bath water, Mason might be the baby being thrown out with it.

Unlike others, I see some remote possibility Mason stays with us as DC. Not likely, but possible. He has been the most consistent (in a positive way) part of this staff.

If we were to hire a current coach (say the Ball State or Hudspeth), he would probably (rightly) want to bring over most of his staff.

If we hired a guy who is an assistant coach at a BIG program like Clemson, TAMU, or Ohio State, he would not be able to bring over his entire staff. While some of them would come over (for promotions), there wouldn't be many/any laterals.

Since I would be shocked if we don't hire an "offensive" minded coach who is a current assistant, I think that Mason and a few of his guys have a real shot at sticking around.

BTW - if by some miracle SMU "won out" (even if just the AAC games), it would be the coaching job of the century and we would be idiots to let him go.
Do unto others before they do unto you!!
